No one would imagine that II. V.
Adams is a preacher from the looks of
him. No one would imagine that II.
V. Adams Is a lawyer from his general
habits, yet Mr. Adams is guilty of both
of these appellations. He not only car-
ries the load lightly, but we rather
suspect he is proud of the first title at
least, and the second one helps him out
of troubles occasionally without hav-
ing to turn over all his property to an
outsider in part payment. While Mr.
Adams has quit "lawyering” in a gen-
eral way, yet there is hardly a Sunday
that goes by that he does not bless
some community with a little bit of
the best preaching they ever heard.
There is nothing about the cut of
the man, there is nothing about the
laugh of the man, there is nothing
about the optimistic personality of the
man, to indicate the type known as
“preacher,” but this great big world
has discovered that a man can be a
preacher and be a laughing optimist
at the same time. When he lectures
he takes the whole audience into his
confidence. He toys with them, he
buoys them up, he jokes wiyi them, he
even fools with them, and everybody
goes away blessing Adams for doing it
When he first thought he could leo
ture the Bureaus shied at him, as they
usunlly do at the untried man, but on©
Bureau, with considerable temerity,
took the chance because they thought
they saw the gleam of gold beneath |
tha rough. Adams was the “surprise j
man” in that Bureau for five years.
Towns everywhere began to want him, j
and the Midland Bureau filially sue- |
cecded in lauding him on a tiuee ywa?
contract.
