Sometimes a fellow asks us
why we % not “publish all the
news.” And if we did the first
dose would be enough to start
him after us with a shot gun.
The county road will be built
on the May and Gage road and
not a mile west as was talked.
However the bridge and the
worst parts of the west road
leading to Chaney will be put in
good condition.-Republican-Re-
cord, Gage.
come in. The printer has be-
deviled thee for wages when
thou hadn’t a farthing to thy
name. People have taken the
paper without paying for it and
cursed thee tor not getting out a
better sheet. All these wrongs
thou hasi born in silence. Thou
shall not enter here.” And as
the editor turns and walks away
Satan mutters: “Heaven is his
home, and besides, if 1 let him
in here he will be dunning his
delinquent subscribers and thus
creating discord in my kingdom.
We dou’t know whether he
said it or not but it is said that
P. T. Barnum once got off the
following about advertising. No
matter who said it, it is sound:
“If you have fifteen dallars to
put to use, pay out ten for ad-
vertising. I can out talk any
man but a printer. The man (
who talks every week to a tlious- j I'ght electric,
and men while I am talking to j ^ve thirty cents,
one, is the man I am afraid of'
and I want to be his friend. The
business man who does not ad-
vertise is a very tpoor stick.
Trade with the man who adver-
tises, if you want to get bargains
and the worth of your money.”

An editor died and slowly he
wended his way down to where
he supposed a warm reception
awaited him. Tne Devil met
him and said: “For many years
thou hast borne the blame for
the bad spelling that the printer
has potten off in the paper. The
paper has gone for one dollar
and alas, the dollar has failed to
I stood on the bridge at mid-
night and looked at the sizzling
town, where the pleasure seek-
ing people were holding the side-
walks down. The moon rose
over the city an^l shone on the
dams and gents, but the glare of
made it look
The windows
of homes were darkened, for no
one was staying there, the chil-
dren as well as grownups were
all in the great white glare.
Deserted were all the firesides,
abandoned the old time game;ahs
that old home circle is naught
but an emty name! The father
is out chug chugging, the moth-
er is at her club, the kids see
the moving pictures, and go to
the holes for grub. How often,
oh, how often, in the days that
seemed good to me have I looked
at the children playing at home
where they ought to be. How
often in those days of the pro-
per stamp have I gazed on the
parents reading, at home, by
the evening lamp. But the
world has gone to thunder, for-
gotten that older day:and I took
up the bridge and broke it, and
threw all the chunks away.
Just after Fred Cook finished
running off the paper last week
a cheerful person remarked:
Well the paper is out, you can
take it easy fora few days, can’t
you?” Mr. Cook replied;“Yep,
nothing at all to do. Ab-so-
loot-ly nothing. Once the pa-
per is printed all any editor has
to do is sit around and watch tfie
little bills come due, aijd gently
shakeing his money bush until
enough dollars drop off to bay
those, these or them bills.
When the editor is not running
off’ the paper his favorite pas-1
time is reclining on a pivan, |
smoking a line full-favored
Flora de Lima cigar, and watch-
ing his subscribers struggling]
with eaci) other to got on his j
list and pay the farthest in ad-
vance. If he becomes ongwayed
he puts out his cigar, slips it in-
to his pocket and slips nonchal-
antly down the Boulevard de | (
Main, just to hear the mer-
chants clamor for additional
space as with tears in his eyes
they dog his footsteps. And
the way the news hunts the ed-
itor is pleasant to contemplate.
When the paper is out the editor
goes to his desk, lerns back in
his chair, look wise and waits
till the day before next pressday
when the people line up in front
of the office and tell him all the
news of the week. He writes it
up in fifteen or twenty min-
utes. ’’—Swiped.
