GHOULS FORCE OPEN VAULT TO
GET JEWELS FROM CORPSE.
BUT FLEE.
London.—Merthyr cemetery. In the
mountain village of Cefu. was the
scene of a starling outrage recently,
the mausoleum of Sir William Thorn
an Lewi* being forced, and the coffin
con(alriinc the body of Lady Lewis
broken open.
Some mystery surrounds the affair,
but It Is surmised that the ghouls who
broke lit had designs on certain dla
mond rings which encircled the de
ceased womans fingers, but as the
body apparently had not been dis-
turbed. it Is Supposed the Intruders be-
came unnerved and lied. Blr William
Lewis has offered a reward of £20
for Information leading to the arrest of
the desecrator

bady Lewis, his wife, who died at
Heart castle, Pembrokeshire, the resi-
dence of Herbert C. Lewis, and was
Interred on October G, 1902
The door Is of solid oak one and
one-half Inches thick, and Is protected
by a massive outer gate of decorative
gun metal.
between the new part of the ceine-
i tery and the spot where the mausole-
* uni stands there ts a ravine, and the
way to the mausoleum ts over a bridge
which crosses the river flowing
through the ravine. There would be
little chance of the sexton or anybody
else hearing anything, especially In
( the noise of the gale
The workmen who made the discov-
ery that the mausoleum had been tam-
pered with were on their way, tu the
‘ early morning, by permission, through
j the cemetery to the Brecon & Merthyr
i railway. They found the *:ate ajar
i and part of the metal work twisted.
They at once Informed the chief sex-
| ton and Police Sergt. Davis, who were
soon on the scene
What was revealed upon Inspection
was so astounding that A. P. Jones of
Aberdare. private secretary to Sir Wil-
liam. was Immediately sent for, and
: Deputy Chief Constable Hands, lire-
: conshire police, also arrived In hot
' haste.
It was obvious that the desecrator
forced the gate open, feeling secure
I from disturbance In the furious gale
j that was blowtng, the shrieking of the
wind being enough to drown any noise
he made Considerable violence had
been exerted to force the gate, and
i the shutters both lay to pieces on the
j ground An unsuccessful attempt had
been made to smash In the lock of the
oak door, which was very much bat-
i tered about. Through an aperture
which the supposed robbers had made
; in the lower panel the party entered
; the vault.
Lady Lewis' coffin had been re-
moved from the slab and lifted down
to the floor of the chamber. The lid
had keen lifted, the plate smashed and
j* the brad and shoulders were exposed
to view The shroud did not seem to
have been tampered with.
It Is thought that the desecrator
becoming unnerved, departed sudden-
ly. At any rate, the mattock pickax
with which he had begun his ghoultsh
work was left on the floor near the
coffin He must have had an intimate
knowledge of the cemetery, for he took
(he mattock, which belongs to the
grave diggers, from a shed some dis-
tance toward the railway, where tho
grave diggers had left tt.
Farther significance is attached to
the outrage by the fact that only a
week ago an act of desecration to the
grave of the late Col D. It. Lewis at
Cefu cemetery was reported to the
Merthyr corftoratlon. whose property
the cemetery Is
Recently at a meeting of the Mer-
thyr parks and cemeteries committee.
Akterman D W. Jones presiding, com
j plaint was made by W. Roberts that
wreaths placet by the oid boys of the
Merthyr county school upon the grave
of Col. David Rees Lewis, a nephew
of Sir W K Lewis, had been de-
nuded of ten yarns of ribbon, the cards

Awful Fate of Blasphemer.
A terrible tale comes from Taslidje
N'ovi-Bazar hi the 'Balkans, concern-
ing the lynching of a blasphemer by
an infuriated mob of Mohammedans.
The victim was a common laborer,
and In course of drunker vaporing*
he gave utt ranee to certain blasph-
ci-ious remarks which aroused the
listening crowd to frenzy. The man
t.as dragged into the yard of an ad-
jacent house, and h0*-' n whilst
a quant ID of lead was melted. He
was then ordered to open his mouth,
anti as it# refused and kept It tightly
closed his lifts were forced apart and
his teeth broken after which the mol-
ten lead was poured down his throat.
