ARTIFICIAL SUNLIGHT
One of the marvelous inventions
of modern science wlui is called
the Leucondescent Lamp. Since ihe
use of electricity has grown so prac.i-
cal and to such generality people have
come to believe that it has more virtue
Mian the mere humming of factory
wheels. The X ray startled the world
with us power of penetrating the hu-
man body and making it so transpa-
rent that the anatomical structure of
the hones becomes plainly visible A
man may thus become fiightened at
Ins own skeleton, I his rav was dis-
covered in Kurope very recently. It
may more properly said to have been
invented. Then there is the Roent-
/en ray; therapeutic developments in
the uses of electric light. 1 he inven-
tors of these lights were all medical
scientist!', learned in the profession and
as abhorrent of quackery as birds are
of snakes. These inventions were
horn of never-ending war of valor,
fortitude, bravery and skill in battling
with the terrible disease commonly
known as consumption. We say this
of these scientists oecause of the cow-
ardice of an ordinary physician in
handling this atHu lion.
About four years ago we read of the
invention of a new lamp somewhere
in Kurope, that would penetrate ns
powerful rays into the lungs and actu
ally kill consumption microbes and
slowly cure the disease. It was this
Lencodescent lan.p. It did not come
to our observation again until about a
month ago when I incidentally dis
covered one of them in the office or
Dr. W N. T. Abel.
Where in all the world will there
be one who is not longing for a rem-
edy for the extermination of the most
distressing disease in the world today ?
We have been watching, too, for
something more about Behring's anti-
toxine remeday and hoping that it
would prove a boon to a world of
sufferers.
But, in the development of the ray,
or light treatment, seems to he the
most reliable hope fora remedy. The
effort is to get an artificial sunlight
and the Leucondescent ray is the near
est approach to it yet made. There
is a'certain place in the mountains ol
Italy where the sun sends down its
healing rays unobstructed by clouds,
and sick folks from all over the world
gather there for help. It is said now
that Arizona furnishes resorts where
the sun is still more powerful in help-
ing consumptives. But who can spend
a fortune every once in a while to get
there? Only the rich. Therefore,
philanthropic science is trying to bring
this blessed sunlight to the homes and
hovels of the poor.
We have investigated the experi-
ences to some extent of Dr Abel with
the lamp and have been astonished at
the results in some instances. For in
stance, one treatment will cure a car
buncle, or small ulcer, or tilings like
that. T wo or three treatments v ill
completely destroy rheumatism,.
Dr. Abel says that he has tried it
on one gancer and is actually curing
it. He has a cast of consumption
also under treatment and says it is get-
ting well. The patient looks as it
this is true. In this day of quacks
and patent medicines it is a serious
matter to know just how to view these
new things that come along. If I
were a law-maker I would try to pro-
hibit the advertisement of patent ined-
icine-consuntption-cures— they are all
frauds, without an exception. There
should he a guilotine established for
the execution of quacks who prey
upon the weakness of the sick and
afflicted. But a notion is well estab-
lished In almost every mind that light
ami heat will destroy all kinds of bac-
teria and build up life. I Itese scien-
tific productions are along the lines of
horse sense and practical experiences.
Again, they are not like drugs, to de-
stroy one thing in building up another,
and often do not bnilu at all.

lit selecting a buggy one is too li-
able to emphasize the price—to make
the price of hist consequence. That
is why people get bit tit the the mail
order catalog. It is dlusioned with
pietty pictures u! buggies, harness and
million of other things, l ake a
Imggv for instance; an enticing price
is planted right under the picture in
large letters Seeing this lovely pic-
ture and tormenting price, the reader
sometimes is moved by a desire to
own it. He glances again at the guar-
antee, and it seems to him there can
he no possible way of getting skinned.
He sends for the buggy. When it
comes it brings an unexpected freight
lull, running it up to the cost of one
at the store. Later the paint chips off,
the wheels get springy, op looks old.
I he buggy is driven to town some
day and a local dealer shows him that
the buggy he bought was a machine
made thing, made cheaply for mail
irder houses, and never sold by re-
tailers, T hat Midi a httggv could he
sold him for lot perhaps his catalog
figures with the freight already paid.
