"If the mob learns from prohibition
that it can take without compensation
the property of the brewer and dis-
tiller, it will learn also that it can
take over the property of the rail-
roads and of the banks," said Jacob
E. Meeker, Representative-elect from j
St Louis, in a statement issued fol- [
lowing his debate with Sam Small, of !
Georgia, at Worcester, Mass.
"In some respects there is more j
justice abroad than in the United ;
States, where we are prone to boast I
of our democratic fairness to one an- !
other and the fact that there are equal '
rights under the law for all.
"For example, I note that Mr. Chas.
H. Randal, a prohibition party Con-
gressman-elect from California, has
outlined a series of four proposed
laws to destroy the legitimate liquor j
interests without providing in any
way any compensation for the loss
of their business, notwithstanding the
fact that the United States govern-
ment has leaned so heavily for sup-
port on these liquor interests and
their business haa been fostered and
built up under the laws, national,
state and local.
Britain's Spirit of Fairness.

England during the war serves to de-
monstrate how differently these
things are done abroad and that there
they recognize property rights and
the necessity of protecting the Indi-
vidual in those rights. While they
are considering prohibition as an ex-
pedient war measure, there is a great
reluctance to put it into effect; first,
because of its interference with the
personal liberty of their citizens and
more especially, because of Great
Britain's spirit of fairness to her
merchants, as the government feels
it to be Imperative to compensate
those whose trade and business would
be cut off. Therefore, instead of de-
creeing prohibition, the government
from the king down has set an exam-
ple of voluntary abstinence during ti

J. P, Hildreth Says Kansas
Patrolman Steered Him
to the Keg
Here is a little incident from pro-
hibition (?) Kansas as reported in
the Kansas City Times:
J. P. Hildreth, a switchman and
former Kansas side patrolman, testi-
fied yesterday afternoon at the elec-
tion probe on the Kansas side that a
keg of beer was kept on tap at the
last city primary election in the First
Ward. The witness said Mike Bid-
nick, a patrolman working out of the
James Street Police Station, took him
as a guest of the keg party.
"Hid you have any conversation
with an officer about liquor?" J. L.
Smalley, assistant attorney general,
anked.
"i went away and met Mike Bid-
nick," Hildreth replied. "I asked him
if there was anything to drink down
there and he said he could take me
where .we could get it. We went I
across seme lots and they had a keg
on tap. 1 made a remark that it was
getting low and Bldnick said 'when |
this is gone wo ran get sonj-i more '" |
