magicians on the public stage. Some
of them are so simple that by carry-

reputation of-a magician. Now, there
are those curious little bubbles of
glass known variously as 'Prince Ru-
pert's drops' and as 'Dutch tears.' Ap-
parently they are little globules of
glass with elongated tails made by
hentlng a small glass rod in a flame
and allowing the molten drops to fall
into water. After they have cooled
you may pound the thick part with a
hummer or mallet, yet you ranhot

•‘THE WEARING OF THE GREEN.”
Good Joke on Official Who Had Pro-
hibited th.e Song.
"The Wearing of tlie Green," which
Dion Bouclcault lined to sing In one
of tils Irish dramas at the old Adelphl
theater, was sung for the first time
in the house of commons last week on
the occasion of the dimer given to
file colonial premiers by the Irish na-
tionalist party, says the Pall Mail Ga-
zette. It reminds one of the Joke
practiced by the late Sir William
Wilde (father of Oscar Wilde) on the
then attorney general for Ireland, who
had prohibited Boucicault from sing-
ing this same song when performing
in Dublin with his company. It immt
lie remembered that there is no li-
censer of plays in Ireland, but the
"Castle” has often put Its foot down
In the case of songs with a seditious
reputation. Shortly arterward Sir
William invited Bouclcault to dinner
to meet "a friend.” The dramatist
came, and sang the terrible tune to
the friend, who that- morning had of-
ficially prohibited it at the old The-
ater Royal, being none other than the
attorney general himself.
Love's Magic Power.
George had been away on buslnen
for a whole long week, and during tha
time he had sent Clara ten letters, sit.
postal cards and 42 picture postcards
Why, then, was there a touch o
coldness in her greeting when he flev.
to her arms on hi3 return?
"Dearest,” ho whispered, “what
the matter?”
“Oh, George,” she said, "you didn’t
send me a kiss In your ninth letter!
"My preriotis," he replied, “that
night I had steak and onions for din-
ner, and you wouldn't have liked
kiss afttcr onionB, would you?"—Btray
Stories.
Be Not Afraid.
Ho has not learned the lesson
his life who does not every day sur-
mount a fear. If you have no faith
In a beneficent power above you, but
see only an adamantine fate coiling
its folds about nature and man, then
reflect that the best use of fate is to
teach us courage. If you have no con-
fidence in any foreign mind then be
brave because there is always one
good opinion which must always be
of Importance to you—namely, your
own.—Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Hen's Nest Eggs.
Botl six* or eight eggs quite hard.
When cold. and firm cut the whites
from the yolks in long thin slips. Set
them aside to-warm in a slow oven
taking care every now and then to
liberally butter them.
Chop very fine any cold chicken or
remains of fish, .add this to the yolks
of the eggs, a little parsley, pepper
and salt. When all has been mixed
smoothly mold it with the hands Into
egg-shaped balls. Heap these in the
center of a dish.
Arrange the shredded egg around
id imitation of a nest. Return to the
oven lor a few minutes to warm and
just, before serving pour ovei a rich
brown sauce.
Sire of Central-Amerlcan Statss.
Very few people have a correct Im-
pression of the size of Central Amer-
ica as a whole, or of its states, taken
separately, srys a writter in the Re-
view' of,Reviews. California see.ns
like a large state. It extends 770
miles ulong the Pacific and has an
extreme width of 375 miles. If
California were laid end for end on
Central America it would cover it
with the exception of Salvador, which
is just the size of New Jersey and oc-
cupies a little over 7,000 square miles.
Stated in another way, If Central
America were lifted bodily end laid
down on cur Atlantic coast It would
.iust hide all New England, New
York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Id short, it lias a combined area of
approximately 167,000 square miles.
Individually, aside from Salvador, al-
ready mentioned, the states could
be compared ns follows: Korn!mas
to Pennsylvania, 45,000 square miles;
Gnu tenia la to Mississippi. 47,000; Nic-
aragua to New York, 49,000; Costa
Rica to Vermont and New lluuipshite,
IX,000.
How to Wash Lacs.
Cover a bottle with fine white
enamel, and tack tha edges of the lace
upon it, being careful to fasten down
every little point, and lay the lace as
straight as possible. Squeeze the bot-
tle In lukewarm soap and water till
the lace is clean and rinse In the 3ame
way. Put It in the sun to dry. dip
bottle and all in starch, then wrap
clean cambric round it and lot. dry in
the open uir. When quite dry the lace
may he untacked and will look as
good as new and will need little Iron-
ing. Black lace may bo washed in
the same way, but without soap. A
few drops of ammonia nmy be used
Instead. Flaok lace nevbr should be
Ironed. *
To Clean Furniture.
Go over the furniture with a cloth
dipped in paraffin oil and allow It. to
stand for an hour, which will loosen
the dirt. Next wa:‘h the furniture
with a suds made of pure soap and
rain water. Rub veiy dry with a
coft cloth and polish with a piece of
white flannel dipped in turpentine
This will not Injure a piano, but ro
store the brilliant polish Furniture
gets dull because it is dirty and
needa to lie cleaned with soap and
water.
