A public speaker once said he had three invariable
rules. He always stood up squarely so all cculd see
he spoke plainly so all could hear, and ?at dov\n

DUTY OF THE SHERIFF
(By*W. P. Camp.)
We very often hear the citizens of
a county saying that their Sheriff is
not doing his duty. Probably there
are Sheriffs who do not do their duty.
Then there are Sheriffs that go a
good ways beyond their duty as defin-
ed in the Oklahoma statute. Sec.
17f)0, Oklahoma statute, says: “It
shall be the duty of the Sheriff,
Undersheriffs and Deputies to keep
and preserve the peace of their re-
spetive counties, and to quiet and sup-
press al affrays, riots and unlawful
assemblies and insurrections, for
which purpose and for the service of
process in civil and criminal cases,
and in apperhending or securing any
person for felony or breach of the
peace ,they and every Constable may
call to their aid such person or per-
sons of their county as they may
deem necessary.” Even what is laid
down here would require that the
Sheriff and his deputies keep thir
eyes and ears open at all times and
be ever on the alert for criminals and
would-be criminals, but some go much
further than Jhis, Many of our best
Sheriffs look into the character and
habits of certain individuals and deep
down and carefully hidden away they
discover the germ of a crime which in
many instances is destroyed without
the public knowing anything about
it. It is not the best for the publi’
to know all the movements of the
Sheriff’s office. If it did the Sheriffs
office would be greatly handicapped.
And if the public don’t know all that
is going on in the Sheriff’s office they j
conclude that the Sheriff is not doing |
his duty and should be kicked out. It i
sometimes appears that the Sheriff
is not doing his duty because in cer-
tain cases the movements and motives
of the Sheriff necessarily has to be
kept a secret from the public. Citizens
of a county should keep this in mind
at all times.
