that be would in auy ca#e prostitute
public poaitioo to bis own private
gain. Hut there is good reason wby
such thoughts should be uppermost
in the mind of the Oklahoman editor,
for he does business witbiu the shad-
ow of just such a transaction. The
county offices were removed to their
present location through just such ti
prostitution of the oHlce of county
commissioner. No one will have the
hardihood to contend that the pres-
ent location is as good in any par-
ticular as the old one, and no one
will contend, either, that the com-
missioners drove a sharp bargain, for
they have for two years paid 11,000
a year rent, and in addition spent
$62ft in putting the building in shape
to be used; whereas, under the old
contract the couuty paid but IGOO
per annum, and that, too, wan at ti
time when rents were nearly double
present rents. Had the commission
ers desired to economize they wocld
have sought the cheapest good loca-
tion, and would have advertized for
bids; but nothing of the kind was
done.
Did you read Pitman's interview
in the Oklahoman a few weeks ago
on the salary of the probate judge?
It will be remembered that Pitman
was on the conference committee
that agreed upon that law. lie's as
ambiguous in his interview as the
law is. If a man means to pursue a
certain policy is there any need of
his talking all around it? Harper is
limited to a salary of 11,250 by reso
lution of the republican convention
as long as the present law stands,
Pitman is limited by his own con
science, and his construction of the
law until decided by the democratic
court. Which can you trust? Sure
ly not ambiguous Pitman.
