Have Occurred Dur-
ing Seven Days
HODGE HEARING SET
The preliminary hearing of
Jesse Hodge, colored, who shot
his landlord, John Lyle, in the
hip with a shotgun a few days
ago, is set for Aug. 9 in the
court of Justice Y. A. Watson of
Dewey township. Lyle is still in
e hospital at Oklahoma City but
is expeated to be sufficiently re-
covered by the above date to at-
tend the hearing.
The trouble between the men
arose over the crop. Hodge says
Lyle oame to his plaoe carrying
a six-shooter in a threatening
manner whereupon he fired. The
six-shooter whiah Hodge oiaims
Lyle dropped, is in possession
of Justice Watson, having been
turned over to the justice by
Hodge when the latter surren-
dered.
DUNHAM INSTALLS FANS
Jap Dunham has installed a
set of fans at his place of busi-
ness that oertainly makes things
more comfortable around there
these warm days. The fans are
a present from Mr. Dunham’s
son-in-law, who made them. Mr.
Dunham uses a small gasoline
engine to operate the fans.
BUYS FATHERS STORE
Nathan Levine, who for some
time has been employed in a
large clothing store at Cleve-
land, returned to Luther the first
of the week. He has bought his
father’s store here and will here-
after be sole proprietor of the
same.
OPPOSE ROAD BONDS
Considerable opposition to the
proposed oounty roads bonds is
developing among the farmers in
the east part of the county. Most
of them are opposed to any in-
crease in taxes for any purpose,
at this time.
BEES MONEY MAKERS
E. T. McNeal is developing
quite an apiary industry at his
farm west of Lutner. He dis-
poses of quite « lot of his honey
locally, selling the balanoe in
Oklahoma City at good prioes.
Bids for the school truck driv-
ers opened by the board Satur-
day evening were unsatisfactory
and al1 were rejeoted. More bids
will probably be oalled for.
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Gingrioh
and Mr.! and Mrs. A. C. Couoh
motored to Spenoer, Sunday, to
see the ball game.

Clyde Dowell made a business

kerson disappeared from Arcadia
last Wednesday night, and he
thinks she may have been stolen.

HERE AND THERE
The safe at the Frisoo depot at
Wellston was blown open one
night last week and a book of
blank express money orders stol-
en. The burglars appeared to
be experts at the job, using TNT
or some other powerful explos-
ive, as the safe door was blown
clear across the ticket offioe and
into the negro waiting room.
Railroad deteotives are working
on the case.
Russell Zimmer-ran, 20, near
Edmond, narrowly escaped death
when his hand got caught in a
binder and the team he was
driving ran away, forcing their
driver to run with them. Zim-
merman was jerked and dragged
around the field for more than an
hour before he was resoued. He
was badly hurt but may reoover.
J. A. Bodine. father of Tom
Bodine, oounty clerk, died at his
home in Oklahoma City, Sunday.
He was 76 years old and an 89er.
Funeral services were held Tues-
day at the City.
It required 12 innings to de-
oide the ball game between Spen-
cer and the State Capitol Em-
ployes, Sunday, Spenoer finally
winning by a soore of 3 to 2. The
game was played at Spenoer,
A thrift campaign will be start-
ed this week among the boys’
and girls’ dubs of the oounty by
Miss Ita Ross, home aemonstrat-
or. She will oonduot lesaons and
distribute pamphlets on the sub-
ject.
County Attorney Robt. Bums
has deoided that the piotures of
the Willard-Dempsey fight shall
not be Bhown in this oounty.
The annual convention of the
Ozark Trails Association meets
this year at Roswell, N. Mexioo,
October 1, 2 and 3.
The Magnolia and Prairie oil
companies are said to be secur
ing leases west of Choctaw.
