[7 is interesting to note that
‘ the Gospel of John, the dom-
inant theme of which is witness
lo the divine ehnructer of Jesus
as the Light of the World and
the Savior of Men. is the only
one of the four Gospels that re-
cord' the story of the washing
by JesUt of the disciples' feet.
The ineident. more than any
other, typifies His humility and
the lesson of humility lie sought
lo teach His disciples.
Here, a.- I have emphasized
before, is something tliut marks
tile greatness of Jesus as differ-
ent from the greatness of other
men. When He made great
claims concerning His Mossinh-
•• 11ii> and promised men light and
life through Himself, it was not
mi any spirit of boasting or any
htegalomania, such a has i hnr-
ac lerlju d other men in history
who have made great claims for
them*l ives. We see. rather, the
meek and lowly Jesus whose
el|iiiyi to greatness i only in the
i onsi iousness that He has come
front God. the Fulhcr. and Unit
tl i. the supreme purpose of His
life and mission to reveal the
Father's will.
In an age when we are accus-
tomed to protection for the feet,
of good toeicing and substantial
shoe-, when sidewalks replace
muddy oi dusty t reels, and
load.- are watered ot oiled to
kci p down the dust, it i not easy
for us to realize how important
guests at dinner with the means
of washing their feet or with a
servant who would perform this
menial tusk.
]F we may judge by other dis-
putes among the disciples os
lo who should have the highest
honor or the place of preferment,
it is entirely possible that at the
Last Supper there was some dis-
cussion as to the place that each
would occupy. The probability
is that it was out of .some such
dispute among the disciples that
Jesus determined to rebuke this
spirit of selfish ambition and to
tench them a lesson of humility
In the most effective wny that it
could be taught. Laying aside
His outer garments, He girded
Him-i ll with it towel and washed
the disciples' feel.
Mere in our lesson, following
Ibis moving incident. Jesus is
peaking lo the disciples, enforc-
ing it teaching. "Know ye," He
ask . "what 1 have done to you?"
He reminds thorn that they'call
Him Teacher and Lord and that
this is right, but lie says, "If I,
the Lord and Teacher, have
washed your feet, yo also ought
to wash one another's feet.”
How low and reluctant, all
through the Christian centuries,
professing disciples have been
lo learn to practice this lesson of
humility! How different the
Church and the world would
have been if professed disciple-
ship had always meant a follow-
ing of the example of Jesus! Per-
