Panama, April 11.—It is understood
that Henry Pettier of the department
of agriculture at Washington, who
has arrived on the isthmus to class-
ify the native woods of Panama, will
soon undertake the organization of
two agricultural schools in the re-
public. The Panama authorities re-
quested Mr. Pettier's services for |
the collection of native woods. They
will be a part of the Panama nation-
al exhibition which will be opened
next year.

Only a little more than five years
ago the Central Presbyterian church
in Shawnee began its organized work
with six resident members and no
house for worship. There being an
urgent desire on the part of a goodly
number of people that the Southern
branch of the great Presbyterian
family be represented here by a local
congregation, the general assembly's

was held partly by the assembly's
committee and partly by a local

missions committee for assistance in
its local support. The little band of
members of this church, with a con
secration, courage and tenacity be
coming those who are engaged in
the Master's work, toiled and strove
to hasten the day when the church
which they love so dearly would be
free from all Indebtedness and also
be self-sustaining. On the first day
of April, 1914, after a littel more
than five eyars of labor, anxiety and
prayer, the cherished hopes and de-
sires of this little flock were prac-
tically realized. Through the kind
favor of the general assembly's com-j
mittee the obligations of the church
to the committee of home missions
have been removed; and through the
faithful and persevering efforts of
the members the church's local in-

PUBLIC OPINION.
There is no occasion to be intem-
perate in our actions with those who
disagree with us. Too much latitude
is nowadays given to those who arc
disposed to assail whatsoever disa-
grees with their ideas of right. Let
one, be he ever so honest of purpose
and lofty sentiment, disagree with
pome of those who have undertaken,
without solicitation of other than
vanity, to settle all of life's problems
and there Is immediately set up a
protest and attacks are made upon
the sincerity of that brave soul who
has dared to set his opinion against
what is believed public sentiment.
After all public sentiment is the most
doubtful thing one ever chased in
the hope of riding to success. It
does not follow one has the right to
charge the will of the majority at
his pleasure, but who so has opinions
founded upon proper and careful con-
sideration of any Bubject, it he ex-
press same with moderationand with
intelligence. In the end is the maker
of public opinion, and beyond that, a
public benefactor who has lighted |
the way for the less-thinking folk.
Strong men think out their plans.
If they be men of the right citizen-
ship, they think best when their
ideas are centered on that which will
rebound to the public good. Not al-
ways do the chasers after band wag-
ons and the sprites who essay to as-
certain first what Is the common
thought and then go forth to preach
same, spread the doctrine that the
average man has in mind.
Too often in these days, when men
are aspiring to a plane of action
higher than was ever before attempted
in governmental affairs, are those
who preach loudest for the reform
of the community those whom one
would seek to lead the multitude to
I the promised land. Quite frequently
windjammers who know nothing more
than to froth where others have spat,
essay to announce and promulgate
that which In Itself has neither evil
nor good, for it Is, when reduced to
the last analysis, nothing but the
palaver of the unthinking and the
wisdom left over from a thinker who
has been called long before.
Public clamor Is not always the
common will. The chaser of that
phantom spirit known as publlo opin-
ion seldom has much to say, tor the
reason he is too buBy trying to find
out what others have said ihat he has
nothing left of his own. Men who
