Is Needed Now!

FOR THE MAN WOUNDED IN COMBAT
FOR DISASTER VICTIMS AT HOME
This battle-wounded American soldier is now
convalescing in a service hospital. His on-
the-spot transfusion made the difference be-
tween life and death. These front-line trans-
fusions were just the first of many needed
by our wounded men. Additional blood dona-
tions are needed to help them through their
long convalescence.
While the truce in Korea has reduced the
quantities of blood needed for the front-line
soldier, let us not forget the wounded man
who has a long road to go to regain his health.
Although our Armed Forces have first call on donations of
blood, significant amounts must be allocated for civilian emer-
gencies. For instance, more than 100 Firemen and Coast
Guardsmen were overcome in the nightlong inferno at
Hoboken, N. ]., that caused more than $4,000,000 damage.
In the Texaa City explosion some time ago, 512 persons were
killed and more than .1,000 men, women and children injured.
Undoubtedly the death toll would have been greater if it were
not for one fact: Hundreds of pints of whole blood and plasma
were rushed to the scene to save many, many lives. The blood
you give today may save a life in your own community —
perhaps even your own life—next week or next month.
FOR POSSIBLE ENEMY ATTACK
FOR FIGHTING DISEASE
We hope it won't happen. But we must
prepare for anv eventuality in this atomic
age. One A-bomb over a big city could
cause 60,(KX) casualties. At least 10,000
men, women and children would need
immediately at least qne unit of whole
blood or its derivatives—and three times
that amount after the first attack. Blood
derivatives can be stored for five years.
So The Federal Civil Defense Adminis-
tration is trying to collect enough Wood
to build a minimum reserve in addition
to immediate military and civilian needs.
Unfortunately, blood collections are still
far short of meeting this need.
Scientists make new discoveries about blood every
day. In 1944, they started using a blood substance
known as Gamma Globulin to treat children suffering
from measles. The measles death rate was cut in half
within two years. Gamma Globulin also prevents or
heips reduce the effects of contagious jaundice. Scien-
tists are finding some success in using it-to prevent
the crippling after-effects of Polio. But not nearly
enough blood is being collected to supply all these
requirements.

Americans always answer the need they know about. Your
blood donations are still needed to meet the continuing
demands of the present day . . . especially in the prepara-
* \
tion of Gamma Globulin.
