Vt^HEN the rich young man
come to Jesus, asking what
he might Mo to inherit eternal
life, and when Jesus bade him
go and soli all his goods and
come and follow Him as one of
the Immediate circle of disciples,
Jesus said, "And thou shall have
treasure In heaven "
What was this treasure In
heaven, worth more than all the
possessions of a rich man? Per-
haps a study of the three chap-
ters In Matthew, that tell of the
ministry of Jesus, and of the
"treasures of the Kingdom," will
help us to sec and understand.
Jesus compared the Kingdom
to treasure hid in a Held, which
n man sold oil that ho had to
buy; and to a pearl of great
price, which, likewise, a pearl-
merchant, knowing pearls and
their value, sold all that he had
to buy
Do we value Ihe Kingdom of
God in thnt way? Is there real-
ism in what Jesus said? He
healed people of their diseases:
He brought health nnd sanity to
those "possessed of devilr,". He
gave food to the hungry, He re-
stoied life: He did many won-
derful works: but ull there things
He spoke of .is secondary or un-
important in comparison wilh
Ihe Kingdom itself, which He- of-
fered to all those who would re-
pent of their sins, and become
as little children.
thee' ; nnd when His,
and critics accused Him of blas-
phemy, he replied by ehaUewgii*
them with the question, “Wheth-
er is it easier to say to the sick
of the palsy, 'Thy sins be for-
given thee'; or to say, 'Arise,
take up thy bed and walk'?4' His
critics were confounded by that,
for a miracle of healing puzzled
them, and they could not explain
it away; but neither could they
understand that the greater mir-
acle was In saving a man from
his sins

In our modem world we have
become very polite and squeam-
ish in avoiding talk about sin
and salvation. Even in our pul-
pits nice nnd eloquent sermons
do not suy much ubout ouch
things. Yet sin is the most ter-
rible fuct of our life—glaringly
apparent on the froht page, nnd
In the inner columns, of all of
our newspapers—murders, adul-
teries, divorces, broken home*,
drunken debauches, and all the
foul list of evil living, with its
reward in human degradation
and suffering. Then, there are
the sins of meanness and selfish-
ness, the lusts, and the greeds,
and the worldly ambitions, and
the lust nnd misuse of power—
all underlying and manifest m
totalitarian war, an index in our
modern time of the sin and full
of man. even in the twentieth
