Hitch-Hiking Beetles
Pick on Wild Bees
BERKELEY. Calif.. Nov. 15—(U.R)—
A hitch-hiking beetle lias been dis-
covered by University of California
College of Agriculture entomolo-
gists. according to UC spokesmen.
The beetles hang onto wild bees,
take a free ride to a flower bud and
lay their eggs there. As the bud
develops into a flower, the beetle
eggs hatch and the larvae wait for
a wild bee. When the bee lands on
one of his honey-gathering jaunts,
the beetle latches on for a ride

Mosquitos Too Fast
For Spray Control
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Nov.
15—(U.R)—Mosquitoes here move so
fast that the spray can’t get to
them, in the opinion of Sam Min-
nlch, director of a mosquito control
district.
State health department Inspec-
tors went out to make a bite test.
They received 15 bites per minute
and then the area was sprayed. A
few hours later they received about
50 percent more bites because a
new flock of insects had moved in.
The next morning they received
only 16 bites per minute because
the mosquitoes had moved away
In search of food.
‘‘After mosquitoes hatch they
hover around lor about two days
and then scurry off In search of
food,” Mlnnich said. "It's only
after they slow down that they can
be wljied out."

Radio Antennas Used
For Study of Stars
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 15—(U.R)
—A tangled array of steel beams
and wires which compose the anten-
nas of one of the world’s largest
radio telescopes at Ohio State Uni-
versity here is picking up infor-
mation about the stars that ordi-
nary telescopes don’t tell.
Observers say the radio waves
from stars are picked up by the
antennas, which are connected to
ultra-sensitive receivers, and then
are recorded to give a picture of
what the heavens look like.
The radio method tells the tem-
perature at the sun’s corono (1,-
800,000 degrees, F.), the composi-
tion of nebulae too for to be stud-
ied by light telescopes, and the
shape of the galaxy in which the
earth is located.
