The Tulsa NVona hamfr this t<.
Muskogee:
Muskogee and Oklahoma City are
put to desperate straits to explain
v. hy it is that in each of those
place* there an hundreds of empty
houses That building operations
ure at a standstill and that people
are leaving for other towns, Tulsa*
for instance, where workmen are in
demand and where there is work u
plernv For a long time degression
was explained by the old story of
crop failures But that «ot thi ad-
bare and people refused to take It
any more. Here is the latest am) I
this one is from the Muskoge j
Phoenix:
"To a wayfaring man It looks
very much aB if the federal au-
thorities were asleep at the
switch so far an regards the
sale of Intoxicating liquors at
Tulsa. One official who has to
do with such matters gave as
an excuse for noC prosecuting
the Tulsa jointists that he had
an Insufficient number of depu-
ties to handle the situation. Of
course this excuse for a failure
to enforce the law is puerile.
One man with ordinary skill and
enterprise can secure a hundred
witnesses as to disorderly places
in a week's time In our lively
sister city. Every man on the
streets knows of a dozen joints
within a radius of five hundred
feet of the leading bank and
within n stone's thtow of the
hotel may be found every faci-
lity for lending a aporting life.
True it is, the strumpet of
"booze" flaunts her signals of
illicit traffic upon -very thor
oughfare and none walks abroad
unsophisticated in Tulsa."
We had expected something better
from the Phoenix than that. We did
not believe that, in order to justify
the depression that has existed in
Muskogee for some time and which
still exists that the Phoenix would
jay the blaine to the door of Tulsa
and attempt to besmirch the reputa-
tion of this city in order to explain
.i perfectly natural situation exist-
ing over there. The truth of tin-
matter is that there is just as much
drunkenness in Muskogee as ther -
is in Tulsa and the records of the
police court will verify this asset
tion. The people of Muskogee are
not morp law abiding than the peo-
ple of Tulsa. The peopl* of Mui
kogee are Just th«* same as other
folkF no b'-rer and perhaps no
worse. So that the Phoenix ought
to see to it that Muskogee is pure
ed of hootlengerg ar.d 'amblers and
thimblerigiers and shone;-rd pla>
ers and others of that ilk before it
casts any n«persions npon the char-
acter of Tulsa's citizenship Clean-
liness, morn I . nd physical. Ilk"
charity begins at home. We re-
spectfully suggest that the Phoenix
start a cleaning up movement In
Muskogee and when It has accom-
plished that mission it may turn its
attention to whatever conditions inay
exist In Tulsa and nobody will emit
a- single solitary "holler."

Letter to Mr. Jerome. Carter,
Dear Sir: You ask how many
seuare feet a gallon will cover.
Depends on condition of building.
There is a great deal of lying on
this point. The stock claim of lying
paints is 100 square feet, two coats,
it's a Me, as a rule.
Devoe covers 300 to 500, our
agents think. We think 300 too low
and 500 too high; though doubt-
less they both occur
How ptuch the other paints cover
is equally doubtful; we guess 100
to 400.
The truth is found in another
comparison. Devoe is all paint,
truo paint, strong paint, and full-
jmeasure; the others in general are,
at'the best, diluted, adulterated and
short-measure. They cover ac-
cording to body and measure. You
can't paint with clay lime chalk
sand barytes water or air no body
in them. Clo by Devoe.
Yours truly,
