A Telegram to Bryan Made Him lhe
Nominee.
A telegram turned the tide that
elected Woodrow Wilson president.
I* happened June 22.
William Jennings Bryan was wag-
ing a fight at Baltimore against the
Ryan-Belmont-<Murphy wing of the
democratic party for chairman of
the Baltimore convention. The ma-
chine was opposed to Bryan. It
wanted Parker for chairman. As
Boon as Bryan reached Baltimore
he gave out a statement that lie
was going to put It up to the can-
didates to commit themselves on
the chairmanship. He sent messages
to Oalrk, Wilson. Underwood and
Harmon asking them to state their
, choice.

mon managers wore reticent. But
Wilson—well, there la where tlie-
thread of destiny turned. Against
the advice ot ill his managers and
lieutenants Wilson, at his home at
Seagirt, sat down and wrote a mes-
sage to Bryan that committed him
to the progressive wing of the party.
He did not attempt to straddle the
Issues, to serve both Bryan and Tam-
many.
I Managers in Baltimore got Wilson
on the long distance telephone and
received a promise from the governor
that he would not reply to the tele-
gram until he heard further from
them. Despite the promise, ho wired
Bryan, "I'm with you." Aud that
telegram won for htm lhe nomination
and made possible his election.
Immediately upon the receipt of
the message Bryan aligned himself
vdtJu Wilson against the other can-
didates. The long drawn out fight
followed. This Is Wilson's reply to
Bryan's letter:
You are quite right. The Haiti
more convention is to be a conven
tion ot progressives—of men who
are progressive In principle and by
conviction.
It must, If It is not to be put in
the wrong light before the country,
express Its convictions in its or-
ganization and in the choice of men
who are to speak of It.
You are entirely within your rights
In doing everything wltMn your
power to bring that result about.
No one will doubt where my sym-
pathies are and you will, I am sure,
find my friends in the convention
acting upon clear conviction and al-
wayB in the Interest of the people's
cause.
I am happy In the confidence that
they need no suggestion from me.

esting than a regular election.
