preaching of the Kingdom (4:17 to

The Three Years' Ministry
Mai thew passes Immediately from
the temptation of Jesus to his (Jul!-
han ministry. Hut let us not over-
look the fact that between these two
there were a number of months inter-
vening during which the real be-
ginnings of Jesus public ministry
took place not In Galilee, but In
Judaea, the record of which we have
given us only by John In John 1:19
to 4:42, all of which took place be-
tween verses II and 12 of Matthew's
fourth chapter or between our les-
sons of last Sunday and this Sunday.
Thus wo pass from "the year of ob-
scurlty", spent largely in Judaea, to
"the year of popularity”, spent large-
ly In Galilee, and this In turn wig
give way to "the year of opposition"
spent largely in Perea and Judaea.
All this should be held In perspective
as we read this first verse of todays
lesson (4:12), "Now when he heard
that John was delivered up he with
drew into Galilee; und leaving Nag.
ar« th. he came and dwelt In Caper-
naum," etc.
The Galilean Ministry Begun
So this meeting of Jesus with the
Galilean llshertnen when Jesus calls
them to leave their nets and follow
him Is not their ftrst meeting with
the Master. They had met him some
months before when they had been
druwn out Into the wilderness to
hear John the Baptist and had now
had these months to meditate upon
what they had then seen and heard
from J.sus of Narnreth. As a re-
sult all that Is needed now as ho
find* them casting their nets Into the
*» •>•■ gracious Invitation: "Come
ye arter me. and I will make you
nshers of nun." und. “they straight-
way left their nets, and followed
him . Thus Peter und Andrew be-
come disciples of Jesus. A bit later
he finds another pair of brothers,
James nnd John. “In the boat with
Zebcdce, their father, mending their
nets; and he called them, and they
straightway left the boat and their
father and followed him."
'Unknown and Yet Well Known”
'these were not supermen whom
Jesus took from their sllrny nets and
smelling boats and fish markets
reninke the world. The explana-
tion Is to be found In the Master
rather tlmn tn the men. He said to
them, "Follow me and I will make
you", and so he did I They were
literally remade Into new creations
os they followed him and learned
of him nnd reflected hla personality
as "Jesus went about In all Galilee,
"aching In their synagogues, and
preaching the gospel of the kingdom,
nnd healing all manner of sickness
among the people". And what
Christ did In them he can repeat
today In the lives of all who will
truly follow him.
