PUBLIC LANDS AGAIN.
We know of no movement of
the school land lessees looking
toward a campaign of education
in the Indian territory favoring
the sale of school lands, but we
still believe that it is to the inter-
ests of botli lessees and home-
steaders to make landlords out
of public land tenants.
The Tribune has done more
missionary work on this than
any other public question. It
has worked incessantly for the
last four years to create senti-
ment in favor of selling the pub-
lic lands to actual settlers. We
are just as earnest in our advo
caoy of this question as we ever
were and we believe that the best
interests of the future state de-
mand this. We have said but
little lately because we are aware
that most if not all of the readers
of the Tribune believe as w'e do,
but we feel that the time is now
at hand when something should
be done.
We call upon the citizens of
Lincoln county without regard to
political affiliations to now take
this matter up and see that Lin-
coln county is not handicapped
by being one-fifth public non-tax-
able land.
No one should be considered
as a candidate to the constitu-
tional convention who is not right
on this question.
We believe that Indian terri-1
tory is now a fertile field for do
ing educational work. Those
people are cursed with a eomli-
but while democrats deplore
such unfair,un-American tactics,
while they regret that a demo-
cratic state is not allowed a rep-
resentative on the board, they
console themselves with the
thought that the people will show
their resentment in the proper
way at the proper time.

THE INDIANS
DEM OCR A TS.
ARE
Hon. 1). M. Hodge, an eminent
Creek who has for forty years ,
been honored with positions of
trust by his tribesmen, gives |
satisfying reasons why the In-
dians are democrats. In a re-
cent speech at Broken Arrow he
said:
“While we, as Indians, are1
without a govern ment of our own,
while congress has violated its |
promises to the tribes and wiped
out all of our rights given under
the treaties with us, we are still
fro** Indians. 1 have been a re-
publican ail my life, and, while it I
is hard to break away from old
friends and old beliefs, the action
of the republican party in the
late congress has led me and
other republicans generally
among my people to leave the re-
publican party and we leave it j
without shedding a tear. We are
free men. We will vote for the
principles of Jefferson, of equal
rights to all and special privi-
leges to none. We believe the
rights and voice of all the people
should be heard, and not the
voice of the few as it now is in
the republican party. We were
promised in treaty that we should
not he deprived of the right of
self-government. After much of
our land has been taken from us
and given to our ex slaves and in
other ways after all violation of
promises and treaties running
through years we are ready to
forgive and forget the wrongs
Oklahoma Democratic
While it is true that Oklahoma
territory has, heretofore, with
one exception, always elected a
republican delegate to congress
it is nevertheless democratic, as
the following figures on county
officers will show. The figures

ties received by the republican
and democratic candidates for
the entire territory:
