GOOD ROADS
Progressive Blaine County in
Oklahoma is determined that the
farmers, who are aiding so ma-
terially in the rapid upbuild-
ing of that progressive state,
shall have roads worthy of their
activities and in response to a
widespread request the office
of public roads of the United
States department of agricul-
ture has detailed Assistant
Engineer Pies M. Speicher to go
to Watongo where he will super-
vise the construction of a stretch
of model road and then make an
exhaustive study of all the high-
way problems now confronting
the county officials.
It is expected that the Federal
Expert will reach Watonga on
October 17, and the task that has
been set before h'ra will insure
his presence in Oklahoma for
a considerable time as an exhaus-
tive study of all phases of road
building and mainlananee;
county administration and super-
vision; and available materials is
contemplated.
For centuries the economic
i nportance of model roads has
been appreciated by the people
of the old world; France es-
pecially showing a thorough un-
derstanding of the importance of
lurnishing farmers with trans-
I ortafion 1 out* s over v hit h they
(ould most quickly an ! cheaply
move t loir products to market
points.
Oklahoma, youngest of all
states, is to be commended for
thus quickly grasping the im
p irtance of this need and for
uniting in the demand fur tin-
co-operation of the Federal
Engineer of the Office of Public
Roads Statistics gathered by
ihe Bureau of the Census, by the
Industrial Bureaus of Railroads,
by the Bureau of Statistics ol
tiie United States Department,
of Agriculture, and by the Office
of Public Roads, prove beyond
argument that one of the im-
mediate results of the establish
ing of such roads is an increase
in the value of all farmlands in
the region so benefit ted. The
average increa e is $5.00 an acre,
ranging from $2.00 to $0.00 in
various Southern and Western
States.
In a new and progressive
state, such as Oklahoma, that
average may be exceeded, and if
it is, the ultimate outcome of
the prospective visit of Mr.
Speicher will he the increase of
hundreds of thousands of dollars
in the value of Blaine County
farms.
During the engineer’s tour of
inspection and study in Blaine
County officials and citizens of
adjacent counties who are inter-
ested in the extension of good
roads, will be enabled to visit
Watonga while the model road is
being built and the experience
and advice of this official will be
at the disposal of anybody who
has the right to ask for it.
A PLEASANT
SURPRISE
Last Saturday twenty of Aunt
Sarah Glaspies neighbors and
friends gathered in at noon with
well filled baskets and gave her
a pleasant surprise, it being her
seventy-sixth birthday.
Aunt Sarah has resided in
Chandler since the early years
and is a friend to both old and
young. One of those present
was Mrs. Mantle Woodman who
has been visiting Mrs. Cardwell
for the past week. Aunt Sarah
and Mrs. Woodman have both
watched Chandler grow up.
Mrs. Woodman will be remem-
ht i-pd by the old settlers, but
now resides in Lawton. We ah
did our duty to the well tilled
tabel and left at a late hour wish-
ing Aunt Sarah many more such
birthdays.
