BIG MEETINGS
THIS WEEK
Seven to be Pulled by Popular Speakers
First at Chandler Thursday Even-
ing. Large Crowds Predicted
Beginning Thursday evening
the people of Lincoln county will
be given seven big meetings by
three of the foremost men of the
new state.
Judge W. L. Eagleton will
speak at Thursday evening at 8
p. in at the court house yard
Every Republican, Democrat and
Socialist is invited to come and
get acquainted with the man who
will succeed Bird MuGuire.
Friday an all day picnic will be
given at Rossville. Haskell, Gore
and Eagleton will all be present.
Friday night at Oak Grove,
sometimes called Lillibridge dis-
trict, C. N. Haskell will address
the people. This promises to be
the largest school house meeting
ever held in Lincoln county.
People will attend- from Otoe,
Union, McKinley and Chandler
townships.

At Wellston Friday night Gore
will address the people and it
goes without saying that Welis-
ton will see that the meeting is a

At Carney Friday night Judge
Eagleton will address the people

and Carney never does things by
halves. Dean, Herbert, Ellis,
McCown and a dozen others are
working like trogans to make

the meeting a success.

At McConnell’s Grove on Sat-
urday an all day picnic will be
held. Eagleton, Haskell and
Gore will all be there.
Saturday night at 8 o’clock at
Agra all-three candidates will ad-
dress the crowd. It is estimated
that 1000 people will be there.
East Side.
Dora Cardwell is on the sick
list this week. Minta Cardwell
is recovering from a three
weeks tussle with fever.
Mrs. Oscar Ingold is getting
along tine and will soon be out
again.
Willie Buck is suffering this
week with poison on tiis hands
and face. Got too close to a
poison vine.
Mrs. Buck has returned from
Norman. She left her daughter
much improved in health.
Mrs. Wood and daughter Fern
are visiting friends and relatives
at Carney this week.
Mr. Bunnell and family spent
Sunday with friends at Payson.
Stella Landsaw and Gladys
Morgan spent Sunday with
friends at Stroud.
Mrs. Lula Shotwell is visiting
her sister in the country and
canning some tine peaches.
Everybody on east side this
week is busy canning peaches.
G. A. Smith is having his barn
repainted.
Press Wilson spent Tuesday
night with his cousin, D. Land
saw, and left Wednesday noon
for a visit to his old home in Ken-
tucky. Mrs. Wilson has been
there visiting for a month.
Socialist County Convention.
Seven Socialists from Chan
dler and three from the rest of
the county met at the court
house last Saturday and nomi-
nated a county ticket. Only one
of the candidate nominated was
present and he did not make an
address. The ticket is the same
as nominated a year ago except J

win Stiles substituted.

Chicago, Aug. 3.—Judge Land-
is in the United States district
court today imposed a fine upon
the Standard Oil company of
Indiana of $29,240,000, the max-
imum amount upon each one of
the 1,462 connts of the indict-
ment on which thatcompany was
recently convicted of rebating.
The judge also recommended
that a call be issued for a special
grand jury which is to consider
the other party to the rebating
operations of which the Standard
Oil company was found guilty,
and it is, therefore, probable
that within a short time proceed-
ings will begin against the Chic-
ags & Alton Railroad company
for the alleged commission of
similar offenses.

Chandler’s officers of justice
have been somewhat mystified
since Saturday a week ago by
the disappearance of Geo. Mitch-
ell a small negro boy.
It was currently reported
that he had been drowned in
L. H. Finch made a business
trip to Stroud the first of the
week.
Austin Rittenhouse spent Sat-
urday in Guthrie.
W. A. Carlock of Stroud was in
Chandler Thursday.
Miss Pearl McMains visited
Chandler friends last week.
Robert Neal has been confined
to his bed with fever the past
week.
W. I\J. Pingrey of Warwick was
upon business the latter part of
the week.
