handful of patriarchs, the most no>«
of whom was Antonio ^radlvarius <
Cremona, who plied his irade In ti*
Seventeenth century. The consequent
j Is that these choice instruments ai
very scarce, very high-priced and
j rsiely heard in public. But now come
j advices from Paris that an ajidlenct
j Ht the Conservatoire, being requested'
to vote on the respective merits of a
Sliadivarlus and some violins of
modern make, as played before them
In the dark, showed a considerable
preference for the [utter. Of course
there Is no reason why moderns shoul<:
not break Jn upon the legend of the
patriarchs If they are willing to de-
vote as much patience and Interest
to the subject as did their forbears
The only type of violin maker who
naturally could not compete would be
the devotee of efficiency whose Interest
centered rather upon the number of
Instruments turned out than upon the
perfection of each.

Three attempts to rescue the cargo
of the steamer Merlda, sunk ten years
ago off the Virginia capes, have failed
The cargo consisted of gold and silver
bars and coin. The failures are at
tributed to storms which Inflicted
damage upon the salvaging equipment
on each occasion. The vessels lies
In only thirty-five fathoms of water so
thnt the project of raising her is en-
tirely feasible and within the limits of
recorded achievements. Four million
dollars, however, is quickly absorbed
In maritime engineering and another
failure will render further attempts
unprofitable. The Idea of rescuing
sunken treasure from the sea has al-
ways had a hold on the imagination
nnd perhaps there will he efforts made
toward accomplishing the salvage for
the sport of the thing.

■MRS. ANNA E. HUGHES
Chicago, III.
Mrs. Anna E. Hughes, 22 West
Elm St., Chicago, an artist who en-
joys a wide and enviable reputation
for skill In china painting, in relat-
ing the facts of her remarkable expe-
rience with Tanlac, says:
"I haven't enjoyed such good heal-
th or felt so well in every way iii
years as I do now. Before I took
Tanlac I was so run tiown that half
an hour at my work would tire nit
completely out and I was actually so
nervous and weak that at times the
brush, would fall from my hands and
I would have to quit work for the
rest of the day. Every night I would
lie awake for hours miserable and
nervous.
"My improvement after the first
few doses of Tanlac was rapid and
constant. I'm happy to say I'm well
and strong now and feel better than
in twenty years. Tanlac deserves
every word of praise I can give it."
