OUR DEBT TO NATURE
(New York Evening Post)
Sitting by the-open Are one re-
flects upon the days and months ana
years of sunshine and all the won
derous alchemy of nature embodied
in the logs that break into dancing
flame, or glowing in the pictured
embers as the flro dies down to gray-
ing ashes. Or perhaps it Is coal,
and one's thoughts run back to the
ages when saurians splashed among
the trunks and foliage and now
pour forth, as It were—(canned sun
light)—for human creatures of to-
day. In a country home one reads
by the oil lamp, maybe reflecting
that this fuel, too. was made In time
Inconceivably remote; that he Is |
drawing on nature's savings of Btore
up carbon. Or one tu ns on the
ready current of electricity, and If
he thinks about It at all. takes It for
granted as a manufactured essence,
little regarding the fact that this,
too, Is only a different form of the
same thing—nature's storeup sun
shine turned to power and sent to
him over a wire. Likely as not the
reader gives no thought to what 1"
added now—the labor of men -ro
mine and power house.
And In the warmth of the Are and
by the light of the lamp he reads.
Stored fuel again. Service of men
again. Prophets and kings, poets
nnd saints, artists and philosophers
and tellers of tales—decades and
centuries dead hut st'll speaking to
anyone who will listen. One who
reflects upon these things in the
comfort and radiance of his fireside.
If he be of humble and grateful mind
will look nn f-om his reading, glance
Into the fire whe-e nature 1s pour
tne forth her board for him. and of-
fer bis gratitude in the familiar:
Forgive us our debts.

Cincinnati School Authorities Want
Tkem to Got Mother* to Cmm
Using "Baby Talk."
An appeal has been made by the
school authorities of Cincinnati to
the mothers of that city to enlist In a
war against "baby talk." and Its ef-
fects on their children, and a special
speaker has been appointed to carry
this cause to the Mothers' ctnbs.
While much of the talk with which
fond mothers beguile their babies may
sound very foolish to others. It seems
to sound good to the baby, and while
the claim that It makes stutterers and
cause* other defects Id speech may
have some truth In It. the "baby talk"
will I •ear comparison with much other
talk heard by children.
While giHid speech Is Important, the
matter Is of more Importance than the
manner—In fact. go>>d matter natnr-
ally tend* to good manner In speech.
If ts st lea«t quite a« Important that
parents, fathers as well as mothers,
are cnreful to select the rlutit subject
matter for talk before and to their
children n« that baby talk be elim-
inated.
Try as they may. the teachers are
likely to hnve a hnrd time anyway to
convince many mothers that baby talk
Is not the proper laniuagc In which
to address the bahv, both as to sub-
ject matter and method of apeech.—

Shun White Golf Shot*.
"Can't keep your eye on the ball 7"
asked the golf Instructor of his pupil.
"I can ensily understand why you
fall to do so. You have on white
shoes. Under ordinary circumstances
there Is no reason why a normal per-
son should ever fall to keep his or her
eye on the hall while on the Jinks. A
bright color on the grass near the
player or a quick movement by a by-
stander are the only two reasons why
a player should ever "lose his eye.'
"White shoes are very distracting.
They are generally brighter than the
ball Itself and are often the cause of
an expert falling to keep hla eye on
the ball. Some men play splendidly
for a long stretch at a time and then
one day they suddenly get off their
srame. In -many Instances this la due
to the fact that they hava put on a
pair of white f* ^es."
