An ounce nf silver will buy as much
of the necessaries of life now as it
would when silver was worth $1.27 an
ounce. Measured by anything else
than gold silver is no cheaper now
than it was 25 years ago. The false
standard made by iniquitous laws has
disturbed the parity. Woodward Jci-
lersontan.
Kxcitement over the discovery of
gold southwest of here lias grown in
intensity throughout the week. There
to now no doubt that gold bearing sand
and rook in almost inexhaustible sup-
ply has been found, and the ouly ques-
tion to bo definitely settled is the rich-
mess of the deposit. All the local tests
iSKlioate that the lind is a rich one and
*11 those who have any knowledge of
naming believe that there is big money
jn it. Samples have been sent to Den-
ver, Kansas City, Chicago and other
points for assay, and until returns arc
received no authorative statement can
be made. Owing to the distance to
railroads communication with the out
side world is slow, but returns should
soon be in. A late report says one re-
turn lias been received and that tin
sample assayed showed it to be worth
$500 to the ton. We have as yet not
been able to verify this report, llun
dreds of men are now in the field:
prospecting, many have staked their
claims and settled down to digging
and panning in the firm faith that
they have a bonanza. That a gold de-
posit has been discovered we do not
hesitate to affirm. That it is of great
extent and iu paying quantity we be
)i«Ti'. On the latter point wo hope to
V» able to make a positive statement
next week.—Arapahoe Argus.
