VALEDICTOHY.
In the Spring of 18S6, something
more tlian five yearB ago. two inex-
perienced hoys, with more time than
money, the publishers of tire Nkwh,
disregarding the advice of many
friends who had no faith in the suc-
cess of the enterprise, entered the
journalistic field and issued the first
copy ~f Thk El Reno News. The
democratic hard times were then in
full force and t ffect and for two or
three years the early prophesies of
friends, of ultimate failure, pri mised
immediate lulltlllment.
But these same friends wor ed the
defeat of their own prophesies. They
prophesied failure but never failed to
assist success by their patronage.
Today the News is on a firm financial
basis. It has the ’ ■ st HUoscrip ;n
list in El Kenu, and is regarded as the
best aovertising medium in the com
munity all ot which is a source of no
little satisfaction and pride to ub.
We watched the News through its
infancy, watched it grow day by day
and year by year, rejoiced in each
new friend it made, and the many oi l
friends retained; thought for it,
schemed for it and dreamed about ii
until it has come to seem almost a
part of us and now that the day ot
parting has come, the time when we
must break away and leave it in thi
hands of strangers it is like parting
witn a dearly beloved child.
But the day o' parting is at hand
With this issue Gunn & Musgr^ve
sever connection with Tub El
Reno News. It has been purchased
by the American Puolishing Com
pany. The conservative republican
policy which has always been ad-
hered to by us will be continued by
the new management. The paper
will be given a wider field of useful-
ness and the subscribers of the Nkwh
will continue to get the paper as
heretofore, hut it will be issued by
ILeAnirrean Publishing Company
And, now in say ing good bye lo tour
readers, we desire to thank them om
and all fur their liberal patronage,
their kindly forbearance where we
have erred, and their continued
friendliness throughout, and to be-
speak for our succetsors the same
treatment at their hands.

The Water Supply.
The water supply question has be
eotne a serious one in El Uen.>
several weeks tlie quality of the wa
ter furnished ‘y the water works P'
the city h is heen abominable, whib
for the past two weeks the wnt.
supply itself has been very scam
The conditions have been such the
the town lias heen practically withou
fire protection. The people who bav
contracts with the water works com
pany for water for house and lawn
use have been without the supply
contracted f r; in fset, the company
has failed i comply W'ith its contract
in every particular.
But the retter ‘Mould be settled on
a fair and equ ab.e basis, if all par-
lies are inclined to he fair and the
company proceeds to rt itiedy he de-
fects in the plant and provide t lie city
with water sufficient in quantity and
pure in quality, then the city Bliould
meet the company half way and only
ask a square deal.
But a fair deal does not require
that the cily or the individual pay for
what lie don’t get. The oily of El
Reno should not pay the water tax
when it is not getting fire protection.
And llie same is true of the individ-
ual. The taxpayer would have a kick
coming if his money was spent for
.vater that was not furnished.
Another thing that the city should
demand and that is indemnity againHt
a repetition of the recent trouble.
And the company seems disposed lu
j.ut its plant in shape, so that it ought
to be willing to Becure the town
against future fai’ureB of the same
nature. There should be no inclina-
tion on the part of the city to take
advantage of the hard »uck of the
company, so long as the company
tries to tote fair. At the same time
tue company should make good its
contract.

Take Hensley’s views on any public
question, then take Simpson’s views
on the same question then run a
medium line between the two and
you won’t be far wrong. The taking
of a position by one of these gentle,
men is a signal for the other to take
the opposite view.
The Interior Department seems t
think that the Missourian who wants
to locate in the new country has as
| much right to a place at the pie coun-
ter as anybody else. It’s kind ot hard
on tile Oklahoma hots who want th
places, hut Oklahomans have a pretiy
good graft with the places the Gov
ernor has to give out.
For the whole people by the far and near counties in one great
and glorious jolitication.
LET THE OLD BIRD SCREAM!!
And we want to tell you what you can do at the Department
Store of ours in this month of dune, 11)01. This interests you.
Hensley says he is glad the pei.pl;
have taken his ad vice and not startei
unnecessary fires for the purpose ot
burning the town out during the low
water period. No doubt if Hensh-t
hadn’t given the advice every man ii
town would have burned his Ii use
and several of his neighbors in t
ore ihio. Hensley is a phibmthr
right.
