The Dawes commission has organ
izetl and given formal notice to the
chiefs of the five tribes that they are
ready for business. The hope prevails
in some quarters that the Indian au-
thorities may prove amenable to rea-
son and enter into negotiations with
the commission.
As announced previous their arrival
the Dawes commission will first devote
its efforts to obtaining consent to a
townsite law. No plan has yet been
made public, but it is more than likely
that Mr. McKennon’s views will gov-
ern such actions as the commission
may take.—Purcell Register.

It is amusing to hear the populists
declare they have forced all the free
silver sentiment. They do not explain
why the populist senators and con-
gressmen introduced hundreds ol bills
for free and unlimited issue of green-
backs, but none for the free and un-
limited coinage of silver; why every
page of populist literature ridicules tin
idea of "intrinsic value” in money,
holding that all there is to a
dollar is the legal stump of the
government. The populist party never
was a metalic money party or never
will he,—State-Capital.
A comprehensive inquiry has lately
been made among the wholesale dry
goods dealers with regard to the pres
ent business situation, and the replies
are very encouraging. About lit) per
cent of them say that appearances are
indicative of a more or less rapid re-
turn to prosperity; no per cent of them
express the belief that considerably
higher prices will come before long;
and 20 per cent give the opinion that
tiiere will be only a slight increase of
average rates. These are the views of
men who make a constant study of bus-
iness conditions, and whose judgment
is apt to he substantially convict.—

If uo agreement ean be arrived at by
the Dawes commission, and they so
report to the next congress, the prob
able policy of congress will Is t > c\
teud the jurisdiction of the conns over
Indian controversies, as was attempted
in the recent court legislation, ami pci
tnit individual Indians to take ihcir
per capita of land in partition. This
would practically nullify the Indian
governments and reyersc then laud
tenure. Any person who attempts to
keep op with the drifi of affairs most
recognixe this. Many think that such
it policy would lie gi - v wrong, but
It remains nevertheless tint probali.e
policy that wiil ho pursued. The ques-
tion then is would It md lie better to
tnake all agreement with the Dawes
