THE CHANDLER NEWS-PUBLICIST
LINCOLN COUNTY’S LARGEST, BEST AND.MOST POPULAR NEWSPAPER—BEST ADVERTISING MEDIUM—GUARANTEED LARGEST CIRCULATION
VOL. XXIV.
CHANDLER, LINCOLN COUNTY, OKLAHOMA, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1.5. 1014.
NO. 9
WHAT'S THE NATIONAL ANTHEM
“Uncle John" Says Only til© Ignorant
Will Answer ‘•America.*’
I have one fact that 1 would like,
to print in every newspaper every
day for a year. That is this:
‘‘The Star Spangled Banner," is
the national air of the United States.
There isn’t the slightest excuse for
n6t knowing that It’s disgraceful
ignorance not to know it. I went
down to the new station opening and
the bands played "America." Zona
Gale, in her recent book, has an au-
dience uncovered when "America" is
played.
Rot! The air of "America” is the
British national anthem. The words
are applicable only to New England.
"Land of the Pilgrim’s pride." Kan-
sas? No, Massachusetts! "Land
where our fathers died." Some of
mine died in Ohio, some in New
York, some in Germany, some in
Scotland, and heaven only knows
where all.
If we must borrow a national air
take the "Marseillaise,” or "Die
Wacht am Rhine." Either is vastly
superior as music to "God Save the
King." But we don't need to bor-
row. We have one in "The Star
Spangled Banner.”
UNCLE JOHN.
GAS WELL NEAR PRAGUE.
\v,pr,| was received in Chandler
Wednesday morning that gas in
large quantity had been struck in a
test well being drilled about five
miles northeast of Prague, over the
line into Okfuskee county. The
drillers will push on down into oil,
which they have every reason to be-
lieve they will find.
Wednesday morning Messrs. F. B.
Hoyt, John Wagner, R. P. Roope and
C. A. Tilghman chartered a car and
made a trip to the new well.
Later reports were to the effect
that oil had burst through and was
flowing strongly. This will open up
an entirely new field.
Miss Blanch Gault of Wellston,
visited a few days this week at the
Mrs. L. E. Martin home.
CHANDLER TO PLAY GCTIIRIE.
Coach Tope with fourteen well
trained athletes left on the Rock Is-
land for Guthrie this morning to
play the Guthrie high school. The
(’handler boys have undergone some
radical changes in the last few days
and the team.looks like it would be
able to give Guthrie a good beating.
The back field composed of Curry,
Pribbenow, Dean and Staubus are
working together fine. Mears has
been put on tackle to take the place
of Key. This team has one of the
best lines to be found in the state.
The boys expect to play mostly
old style football, but in case it is
needed they have the plays that will
execute the forward pass. Staubus
is doing part of the passing now and
he is excellent for a new beginner.
If the team lacks anything it is
pep. There is evidence of loafing on
duty. It was seen when the Prague
team showed the boys a few things.
It is to be hoped that the boys get
down to business and if they do,
they can best Guthrie.
Chandler defeated Guthrie last
year by a dose margin and the year
before Guthrie was the victor, so this
is a chance to lead. Here is hoping
that Chandler keeps up her winning
streak.
SOONERK AGAIN STATE
GRIDIRON CHAMPIONS.
Norman, Okla., Nov. 12.—In a
football game on Boyd Field Friday
afternoon, November 6, which was
a real gridiron battle, the Oklahoma
Sooners again triumphed over the
Stillwater Aggies and by the score
of 2 8 to 6 retained the championship
of the state. Both teams were In
the pink of condition which enabled
them to put up the best game in
the history of their athletic relations.
Not until the last period of the game
when the Sooners made their third
touchdown was final result of the
game removed from the realm of
speculation. Both aggregations are
representative types of the best of
Oklahoma's young manhood, playing
a clean game throughout the great
contest which meant so much for the
victorious eleven.
W. R. C. INSPE4 *TlON.
Last Thursday Mrs. Zenith Shini-
er, of Grant Corps No. 1, Oklahoma
City, deputy department inspector,
officially inspected the corps at
| Chandler.
Inspector Shimer found the local
organization in excellent condition
and had many warm words of praise
for the manner in which the work
of the order was being conducted.
The occasion was well attended
and dinner and supper was served at
Masonic hall for all present
From here Mrs. Shimer went to
Stroud and Sapuipa to inspect the
corps’ at those points.
Mrs. Frances Spratlen and Miss
Maud Ashton visited in Oklahoma
City a couple days the latter part
of last week.
MAYOR EXERCISES VETO POWER
Not long since the city council
adopted a resolution allowing certain
local attorneys fifty per cent on all
money collected by them on delin-
quent sewer taxes. Mayor Oleson,
after ascertaining that competent le-
gal aid could be secured at consider-
ably less than the tifty-tifty, vetoed
the action of the council.
The mayor is to be congratulated
for his prompt and decisive action
in behalf of the taxpayers of the city.

BRIDGE DEAL TO <*> INTO
COURTS.
Thorough Investigation To lie Made
By Taxpayers Who Declare They
Are Uertuln the Contract is Void.
As a climax to the charges made
by the News-Publicist in its two Is-
sues just before the election, to the
effect that there was something rot-
ten in a certain contract for bridge
material entered into between a rep-
resentative of the Rochester Bridge
Go., and Commissioners Morrow and
Burford, the matter will be taken
into court and threshed out.
The names of those who aX> to
sign the complaint will be made
known just as soon as the petition
in the case is filed in the district
court. Already legal aid has been
secured in the person of Emery A.
Foster. Attorney Foster has exam-
ined the alleged contract and un-
hesitatingly pronounces it a void
contract.
The outcome will be watched with
close interest.
