WHAT SHALL REFORMERS
DO?
Lust week we published an editorial
from The Independent in which that
paper called for a referendum vote as
to what course the national populist
party should follow in the present
crisis. The enthusiastic responses
whicli are pouring in lead us to think
that this same method applied to local
conditions may be prolitably employed
to call forth an expression of opinion
from the political reformers of Lincoln
county. The columns of The Publicist
are accordingly thrown open to its
readers and you are not only cordial-
ly invited but urged to tell us what
you believe is the wisest course for
populists to take at this time. We be-
lieve with Tom Watson that “if all
those who believe in the principles of
Jeffeisonian democracycould beunited
in harmonious action we could sweep
the country.” What do you think is
the best way to unite the people who
so believe? Can it beat be done by
disbanding the people’s party organ-
ization and joining with the democrats
to help control the action of that
party or by maintaining an independ-1
ent populist organization?
Kill out the following ballot and re-
turn It to The Publicist with the rea-
sons for your decision. If you don’t
want to give your reasons, cast your
vote at least, and rellect that in so do-
ing you are putting into practice the
initiative and referendum. Let u
have a lively expression o( the views
of our readers within the next few
weeks:

PEOPLE S PARTY REFERENDUM BALLOT.
Question: -Should the People’s Party maintain its national
and local organizations independent and separate from ad
other organizations, or should it abandon its organization
and join with Mr. Bryan and other reformers, in an effort
to capture the democratic organization as a basis for build-
ing a reform party for the campaign of 1908?

FARMERS HOLDING
REMAINING COTTON.
A movement among cotton planters
to hold their remaining portion of the
crop for higher prices is becoming so
general as to indicate the probability
that a considerable number of bales
wilt be found in the hands of the pro-
ducers next spring. Merchants und
bankers in many sections of the cot-
ton belt are offering to advance money
on cotton on liberal terms in an ef-
fort to co-operate for the betterment of
conditions which they agree are un-
just At this time there is plenty of
money in the hanks and among the
merchants of the south us well as in
the rest of the country. It is easier
now to secure credit on cotton secur-
ity than it has been at other times in
the past and this condition may he
taken advantage of by the holders ot
eotton-
tn any case increased demand from
the Dills which the present moderate
prices will incite, will have a tendency
t* send the price gradually upward
regardless of the hysterics of the gam-
blers.—State Capital.
