To Increase Supply of Salmon."
Important experiments have recent-
ly been made by the fisheries expert
for British Columbia in connection
with the hatchery operations. Last
year at Seaton lake, instead of plac-
ing all the sockeye salmon eggs in
trays, as has been the custom hereto-
fore. a plan was adopted more in
keeping with tjie natural methods fol-
lowed by the fish. The eggs, after
having been inoculated with the
lumyli, were buried under five to sev-
en inches of sand and gravel. Over
200,000 ova were thus treated in tanks
especially made therefor, and as a re-
sult 180,000 healthy fry have been
taken out with the possibility of more
to follow. This is a splendid record,
as compared with the old pan sys-
tem, and it is believed by the experts
that the new method will revolution-
ize the business of the hatcheries.

The Pioneer Mother.
The school children of California
are saving up their pennies to pay
for the monument to the pioneer
mother which is to be erected by
Charles Gradfley for the Panama-Pa-
cific exposition. The woman's board
•of the exposition suggested that such
a statue be erected and the children
were the first to respond, sending in
an avalanche of pennies. The cen-
tral figure is that of the pioneer moth-
er dressed in a homespun gown and
at her knees are two sturdy little
children.
The average woman may not be
much at mathematics, but she does a
lot of figuring in trying to perfect
her figure. ’ ,

Washington.—Federal quarantine to
check a dangerous outbreak of foot
and month disease among cattle in the
middle west was extended by the de-
partment of agriculture to include all
Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan and
Illinois, and virtually placed Ohio un-
der the same restrictions.
It affects the Union stock yards of
Chicago, greatest cattle market of the
world, to tile extent that no live cattle
may be shipped from these, during the
duration of the quarantine, even to an-
other infected area. Under the official
interpretation of the order, cattle
from other states than those under
quarantine may be shipped to the Chi-
cago yards, but they may leave there
only as dressed meat.
After a day of conferences among
officials here and exchanges with field
agents throughout the affected area,
this explanation of the government’s
action was issued at the department
of agriculture:
Must Disinfect Stock.
"The provisions of this quarantine
are practically tile same as those pre-
viously announced for a few counties
in Michigan and Indiana. No cattle,
sheep or swine can be shipped from
these states in interstate commerce
and all fodder and animal products
of every sort which might possibly
convey the disease must he thorougniy
disinfected.
"No cases of foot and mouth dis-
ease have as yet been discovered in
Ohio, but on account of the fact that
shipmehis from infected areas have
been marie to this state it has been
found necessary to place practically
the same reserictions upon interstate
shipments from Ohio as on those from
the four other statees.
. Disease at Dairy Show.
"Another instance of foot and mouth
disease has been found among the
stock exhibited at the National dairy
sliow in Chicago.^ -In order to prevent
the spread of the infection, the other
animals are now guarded by sheets
saturated with disinfectants and in-
closing the stalls in much the same
way as human patients are isolated in
hospitals.
ANOTHER MEXICAN PRESIDENT
Wheel of Fortune Advances Eulalio
Gutierrez This Time.
Mexico City—A dispatch received
here from Aguas Calientes says that
General Eulalio Gutierrez was elected
provisional president of Mexico. The
election is for a period of twenty days
only.
The Aguas Calientes convention vot-
ed to meet in Mexico City later.
General Gutierrez is a close friend
of General Carranza and rose with
Carranza against Huerta. He defeated
a force of federais near Saltillo last
January and in April expelled the
Spanish residents from the city of
San Luis Potosi. One of his greatest
victories against the rebels wras won
at Vanegas in June.
The constitutionalists' peace con-
vention accepted the resignation of
Gen. Carranza, as first chief of
the constitutionalist party. Villa re-
signed at the same time from the com-
.niand of the northern division of the
army. It then became incumbent upon
the convention to elect a provisional
president. "Its right so to act already
has been questioned in Mexico.
The convention was called after
General Carranza had entered Mexico
City, its purpose j. ns to compose the
difficulties between the revoluttionary
factions In the republic; to decide
upon riot a Is »f V form of government
for the country and io determine the
presidention successions. Generals
Carranza, Villa •end Zapata all were
represented by delegates.

FINE RASH ON BABY'S BODY
1341 Park wood Pi., N. W., 'Washing-
ton. D. C.—"When my babe was about
two weeks old I noticed a scurf a*i her
scalp which gradually grew worse. It
started with a fine rash over head and
body and made her very restless at
night. The rash left the thick scurf
on her head. We used -. -,
and other remedies recommended by
frieudB, but nothing seemed to do any
good.
"This continued until she was three
months old and by that time it formed
sort of a crust, so that her scalp never
looked clean. Nothing helped until
wo used the Cuticura Soap to bathe
her and Cuticura Ointment to anoint
her. They acted like magic, clearing
the scalp entirely. The trouble dis-
appeared.” (Signed) Mrs. H. L. An-

Rev. R. B. Dodge of Wailuka is the

cently a Japanese couple came to Mr.
Dodge with a request in the sign lan-

as follows:
"You like wa^iine?”

"Bimeby no kickout?”
"No.”
"You like this kane?” to the woman.
