The Home of M'losmic Germs.
And now the theory that the atmos-
phere which prevail. in swamps und in
Jlieir Immediate vicinity is as pure a#
ts that burn binding mountain tops in
advanced. Iiv scientists of more or less
repute The atmosphere hanging over
swamp by chemical analysis., hnsbeen
found to lie as free from any poiRon,
they say. as the ozone chilled by the
mountain snows. “But no fevers are
developed on mountain tops." suggests
the adherent to the old idea, “while
miasmie influences generally ob-
tain in the region where swamps
abound.’ That is true, but tiio
new scientific debater claims the
air has nothing to do with
the fever. The miasmie germs, lie
claims, do not find their wuy into
the human system via the lungs, hut,
lihe cholera germs, Via the stomach.
They are swallowed rather than in-
haled. It is the water of swamps that
contains the animal and vegetable
poison, so much to lie dreaded, rather
than the uir above the swamps. In
proof of this position .lames R. Randall
recently wrote in Southern States
that southwest Georgia was a verita-
ble malarial pest-hole until it was dis-
covered that it was in the artesian ba-
sin, and wells were sunk to a depth at
three hundred feet and the waters of
these used for drinking rather thun the
surface water that had been used, and
malaria in southwestern Georgia Vie-
pame only a memory.
Mummies fV>r Chicago.
Chicago is going in for Egyptian an-
tiquities. The president of the Field
Columbian museum has just purchased
in Egypt twenty-five mummies, besides
other relies of the land of the Pharaohs.
Hut Chicagoans must still go to New
York and visit the New York Historical
society's library if they want to see the
best specimens of Egyptian antiquities
to he found on this continent, says the
Rochester Union und Advertiser. rrhat
Institution possesses two, or it may lie
three, mummies of sacred bulls, the
only specimens in the New World, und
some of the best in existence. There
are very few of these mummied bulls.
The British museum tried to purchase
one of them from the New York His*
t,orien 1 society, hut could not obtain it.
The society's building at Second ave-
nue und Tenth street is ti storehouse
full of treasures.
An American admiral was lately or
dered immediately to Montevideo, the
capital of Uruguay, to take command
of the Atlantic squadron that was sta-
tioned there. No swift vessel of tho
navy was available for his transporta-
tion and the admiral was obliged to
take this course: He went from Wash-
ington to New York and thence took
eu Ki.ulisu steamer to Southampton,
Thence lie took another English steam-
er to Montevideo, crossing the Atlnutio
<njea.it twice In foreign ships to reach
his, port on the same side of the ocean,
this circumstance illustrates the hu-
aiiiiating dependence upon foreign
4jeuns of communication which Ameri*
Van travelers and merchants ure under.
Is London sometimes fifty families
Jive in one of the modern liriek castles
that are constructed a Her the Xmcrlcan
■flau. While the “sky-scraper" type of
building is not a modern Invention-
Instance tlio Tower of Babel and
Carthage mid Tyre' tall structures
yet ill these latter place would look
small and mean by the side of the mod-
ern American attempt in the same di-
rection. The American idea is being
copied all over the tail-building dis-
trieis of Europe.
The deadly cigarette lias again add-
ed to its unrecorded work of destruc.
tion. This time il i a young Ameri-
can pastor, as reoorded by tho Union
Signal, whose fatal addiction tn'the pois-
onous "white pipe" lias just ended
his promising career ut the age
twenty-nine, lie leaves a young wife
and three babies. Although the papers
chronicle til** cans** of his (leatli as
heart failure, there is no doubt that he
died from a “smoker's heart." He was
the heaviest cigarette purchaser in the
tow 11.
A Nevada man lately captured a
wild goose and thinks that he lias a
grand prize. Attached to the birds
