SEA DISAPPEARING

Letter From John Riner.
(ruhllHhetl by
II. Kiner.)
eourteay of bin brother, W.
St. Petersburg, Dec. 17.—The sea of
Azof is disappearing and remarkable
scenes are in course of enaction. At
Taganrog the .waters have receded to
such an extent during the last five
days that the bed of the sea is visible
for a distance of thousands of feet.
High winds hurled clouds of sand
shoreward, covering the town. Ves-
sels are lying high and dry and con-
fusion prevails in the harbor. Work
in the factories lias had to be reduced
to a minimum, owing to a lack of
water.

The formal organization of the

announced from Paris Wednesday.
It was reported to have a membership

the natural gas fields here are being
practically illustrated. The use of

is being gradually extended. The Oil

of L. S. Alfred, is now lighted and
heated by natural gas.

Dear Brother and Family:
1 have changed a^ain, as you will
see by thi beading of this. I left Ca-
bias the 7th of this month and arrived
here the 14th. I stopped three or four
days in Manila.
This place is about 120 miles (by
water) southeast from Manila. I am
in charge of the quartermaster store
rooms here. I cannot say I like this |
place so well as my former stations.
This is the best and neatest town I
have seen yet. 1 hope to be more sat-
isfied when I become better acquaint
ed.
This is a great cocoanut country,
scareelv anything else raised for sev-
eral miles around. They are building
a four company post about one and
a-half miles from town.
All supplies received and all travel
between here and Manila are by boat.
It is a very nice trip—beautiful coast
line scenery and many small islands.
1 have made application for transfer
to the states, to take effect about
April next. My papers have to go to
Washington for approval of the quar-
termaster-general. If I don’t get the
transfer I will ask for a leave of ab-
sence for a few months.
My health continues good. Regards
to all. John E Riner.

These lines are not original with me.
i'hey are taken from a tuneful little
dittv sung in George Ade’s comedy
“Peggy from Paris." The jingle
danced through my brain the other
day as we lay on the siding at Prairie
Junction, or some such place, to let
the Santa Fe’s west-bound California
limited go by. It was a gorgeous
train of palace cars, and behind the
plate glass observation windows
beauty and fashion and youth and
old age were lolling among the luxu-
rious cushions, some visiting, some
reading, some pleasantly dozing,some
making wreaths of cigar smoke, some
gazing dreamily through the windows
at the passing of cities, and Helds, and
forests and rivers.
I stood on the rear platform of the
last ear of our train and watched the
California limited as she faded away
toward the golden west. And I thought
of the difference between travel now
and travel in the days of ’49, when it
took the gold-seeker half a long,
weary year, filled with all kinds of
hardships, to travel the distance that
is now covered in three days. I
thought of the slowly moving wagons,
the dust, the stones, the jolting, the
thirst the hunger, the homesickness,
the snail-like crossing of plains, the
laborious climbing of mountains, the
weary dragging weeks, the never-
ending trad.
In Ihese pulaces that had just glided

place to spend the winter months
where the climate is perpetual sum-
