i'ROMlSK GAS TO KL RENO
Mayor P. P. Duffy and L. B. My
em returned Saturday from Tulna
where it hey had been to represent,
the city and the commercial club
in an endeavor to secure natural
gas for I£1 Reno. Both gen*.emeu
report that the Oklahoma .Natural
lias company's officerh at Tulsa.
are willing and anxious to come to
Kl Reno btit financial condition,
prevent nhem from extending theii
line at this time. Messrs Du ty and
.Myers tuet Saturday morning wi h
Messrs. U. T. Braden and Air
Bartlett, officers ol ihe Oklahoma
Natural Gas Company and laid
the proposition before theui, ex-
plaining the ueeds and desires of
Kl Iteno, relative to securing nat-
ural gae They were treuted very
cordially by the Tulsa men. In ex-
plaining his proposition in Hlic mat-
ter Mr. Braden said in pant: About
live years ago we took up the mat-
ter of supplying gas to some of the
southwest cities and your city was
included in the project We built
h twelve inch gas Hne to the south
wes: Liking in the towns of Cushing
Guthrie. Seward. Kdniond, Britton.
Oklahoma City and so'me smaller
places. We did not anticipate such
a lax upon this line as we received.
Ii is merely ample a this time to
supply the customers 011 the route,
Oklahoma City began to grow ex-
tensively arter our line was built
and It was llhere that the patronagu
was the greatest surprise. In fuel,
if the city had kept 011 growing as
she did four or five years ago our
line would have been inadequate
to supply "he demands 1 anticipate
thai Oklahoma City, as other cities
In your part of the country will
soon begin to increase in population
and we will be compelled to in-
crease our lines. In doing *i> we
look with favor upon reaching Kl
Iteno, which we consider our near-
est and best market to reach. It
may be possible that a 'twenty Inch
line will be laid to Guthrie this
summer and branch from there to
10! Heno and Enid. At any rate
when we reinforce the present line
we intend to reach Kl Reno. Tie
delay at present la because of cer-
tain financial stringency in the
eastern market where 11 he big ma
joriity of our stock is held. It' we
can Induce them to expend more
money we will he ab'ie to reach your
city. How soon that will be I am
nor really able to say It is our de- j
s ri to reach you a.s soon as pow
slide."
ABOt'T THAT BOX CAR
A small sized tempest in a tin
can seems to be brewing over 'the
proposition of allowing the Inter-
urban to put a fieight service into
I'M Reno. The organization of the
Canadian Valley Co-operaitlve Asso-
ciation for the purpose of market-

j quickest, easiest and cheapest niau-
I ner. The quickest and cheapest
manner for the farmers living along
j*he route of the interurban is of
| itturse a freight car service over
(that line. As originally planned
this service was to slant from Ban-
ner and of course nothing is more
natural than that the farmers near
Kl Reno should also desire to avail
themselves of the additional trans-
portation facilities and ask tha'
tliu service -tart from Kl Reno, Un-
fortunately this cannot be done
without bumping against a few-
snags and the quicker the measure
of hese aforesaid obstacles is taken
the better.
It seems that the interurbaj) has
110 franchise to operate inside the
corporate limits and only operate
their passenger service over the
streets ot the city by sufferance and
then 1 hey munt operate as a local
car. Certainly they have no right
to operate a freight car into thv
<■> y' and we do not believe that any |
one seriously favors the idea of
operating a box car down the mid-
dle of the principal business streets
neither do we believe that even 'he
Interurban people would seriously
contemplate the plan although it is
generally understood that they
would be extremely pleased to get
in and out with a freight service and
it can be readily understood that a
'clubber car" as i.- proposed would
be made the opening wedge to a
heavy freight car
•N'o one that w<* know of seriously I
believes lha/t even this would devel-
op into a dire disaster for even the
C. It. I. At P. Ry. It would prob-
iibly bring them as much traffic as
il would take from ihem, and even
if every man in the city was op-
posed to it there would certainly be !
no way to prevetvt the Interurban
from putting in a station just out-
side of the corporate limits and it
would still be nearly as convenient |
as the freight depots of the Rock j
Island and the Port Smith and
Western.
As a matter of course every mer-
•hant and business man in the city
s more than anxious do do every- I
thing thai can be done to assist j
every movement for tile upbuilding I
of farming interests and there Is no I
doubt but that a plan can be work- j
ed out that will enable them ito se
cure the service and at the same
time not conflic* seriously with the
interests of anyone else If it Is
going to come anyway, why not get
all tliait we can in the trade? Why |
not make it a condition precedent
to allowing a freight serv'ce into
the city that the Interurban make |
(raffle arrangements with the Santa ]
Fe or the Frisco giving us through
rales and through billing over that
road This would in effect give Kl
Reno another railroad, would give
the interurban the desired entrance
into the ciltv and give the Rock Is-
land regulation competition instead
of jitney service.
