Che Foo, Aug. 24.—A junk
which left .Liao Ti promontory
the night of August 21, has just
arrived here. She reports, that
Japanese have succeeded in oc-
cupying Antszshan forts as well
• as another fort, probably Etzsh n
about a mile southwest of Antz
eshan. They have • driven the
Russian^ from the parade ground
which lies about1 two miles north
of the harbor; they have destroj-
ed two forts at Chaochanko,
which is within the eastern forti
tications, and they have advanced
tp a point .near Chaochanko.
This news confirms the informa-
tion received here previously and
which the local japantse were not
inclined to .believe.
The junk heard fireing until
midnight of August 12. Scarcely
a building in Port Arthur remains
undamaged. The town ' hall
which was used as a magazine
has been destroyed.
Four large warships unable to
fight are at .port Arthur. Only
one ship, a vessel with two masts
and two, funnels, has guns aboard.
The fire of the forts, not cap-
tured by the Japanese together
with the effects of land mines is
given as the .eason why the Jap-
anese have as yet conqudred
the kussiai. fonghoU.
Tokio, Aug. 24—Admiral Ka-
taoka reports that'as the Russian
battleship Sevastopol was'.emerg-
ing from Port Arthur on the 23d
struck a ’ mine, after which she
* was seen to be listed to starboard.
She was towed back into the
harbor.
St. Petersburg, Aug. 24.—With
all Russia hanging breathlessly
on the fate ol Port Arthur,, even
such a national event as christen-
ing of the Revitch i=> robbed of
much of the prominence which
would otherwise be accarded it,
and St. Petersburg tonight is dim
$10,000.00.

and silent w.th no sign of activi-
ty. Although the fairylike
grounds of Peterhdf are gay with
flags and decoration in readi-
ness for tomorrow’s .celebration
and though the great palace is -
^ filled with distinguished guests
the scene resembles a weighty in-
ternational conferences than a .
gathering of merry makers.
In the capitol tonight ii filled
with sinister rumor* of Port
Arthur’s desprate straits. Super-
stitions are predicting a fall of
the fortress on the day of. the
baptism of the Czarevitch, but
this is easily traceable to the fact
that several big Russians reverses
have occured on Russian fete
days.
