That dignitary. Mr. Matt Spencer,
was an old man In those days—a m
He rising seventy, but be was as Jolly
as the most youthful, and enjoyed a
good story as thoroughly as did any
of the young men.
Laually our meetings were so well
attended as to leave little time for
any save the serious objects for which
the Lyceum existed. So It was an ex-
traordinary occasion when, one night,
a driving storm kept away so many
of the faithful that the customary
quorum failed to show up, That the
dozen present, however, must have ein
braced some pretty good material, I
feel sure, for as I look back, I remem-
ber that they included a future United
States senator, two or three able law
yers, one or two future successful
newspaper and literary men, und one
man who has since held half a dozen
prominent positions in his state.
Naturally, with such n catherii
even a “no quorum” meeting couldn t
prove tame. And though the regular
program was out of the question—a
discussion of Shakespeare's Intention
concerning the character of lagu was
to have been In order—It was unani- ,
mously toted to devote the evening to | P'cnic Dinner-
story telling.
After various yam spinnings—whose
subjects don't matter here—some one
turned to Mr. Spencer with a request
for one of his fatuous talcs.

ened the lines in the old man's face
