The women of Elk City have or-
ganized a club for the purpose ot
which will be to further the interests
iu the candidacy of F. E. Herring for
governor. At a recent meeting the
following resolutions were adopted
We, the members of the Ladies
Herring club, present to you, Hon F.
E. Herring for the democratic nomi-
nation for governor.
We heartily endorse bis candidacy
and desire to state to the democratic
voters of Oklahoma, that he is one
of Oklahoma's practical business men,
m most successful farmer and stock-
man.
It would be impossible to find a
man more thoroughly capable of un
derstanding the many and varied
phases of life in this work-a-day
world.
His attention to business and his
political activities have not crowded
out recognition of other factors
equally important in the world's work
shop. His clear insight of education
al matters, combined with the execu
tive ability for which he is noted, to
gether form a bulwark of safety for
our public school system.
We admire him for his plain deal-
ing, Mb public spirited optimism, his
devotion to those great moral ana
social purposes which promote the
welfare of every man, woman and
child.
His decisions are prompt and uu
equivocal and he is on the right side
of every fence.
We women cannot vote (yet) so we
are willing to join hands with hands
that can put the ballot in the box to
nominate the man who has risen from
the ranks of the common people.

(Whitney (Texas) Messenger.)
The Messenger is in receipt of the
Elk City, Okla. News Democrat which
was sent us by our old time friend,
O. H. Young of that city. On the
front page of this paper is the like
ness of Hon. F. E. Herring, and a big
two column write-up of a big meeting
in which Mr. Herring is boosted for
governor of Oklahoma. It is claimed
that Mr. Herring is making a remark
able race and stands a fine chance
of winning that office. Our readers
will be pleased to know that Mr.
Herring was reared on the old Her-
ring farm about a mile south of Peo
ria.
Mr. Herring is of one of the finest
families in Hill county and is made
of the stuff that it takes to make
(rue man. If he is elected he will
bring honor upon both Oklahoma and
also his native state. We only trust
that the people of Oklahoma will look
upon him as we Hill county people do
The older citizens who knew Mr.
Herring will await for the results of
tills election with much Interest.
state press comment
A Business .Man for Governor.
(Oklahoma Farmer.)
The widespread call for commis-
sion form of government in citiee is
an expression of the people based up-
on a growing demand to rid city gov
eminent from so-called politics. It
is a movement toward substituting
recognized business principles for the
spoils system In the operation of gov-
ernment.
Whether the movement will extend
to state government remains to be
seen, although advocates of it are not
hard to find. Along with the demand
for business government has come a
companion demand for business men,
men who have made successes of their
own business, to take the commiB
sionerships.
F. E. Herring of Elk City, who is
running for governor on a platform
of "Reduced taxes," believes In the
application of business principles to
the conduct of state government. No
body can dispute that Mr. Herring
has made a success of his own busl
ness, his business career being trace
able through thirty years of succesf
as a stock raiser, ranchman and mer
chant.
He is telling the voters that he re-
gards the state government In the
light of a huge corporation which
needs only the guiding hand of an ex-
pert business manager to produce ef
ficiency at a minimum cost. To do
this reii ires application, he says, of
business economy and sagacity, such
as he has taken long years and pains
taking effort to acquire.
He is openly an enemy of the poli-
tician and the spoils system. If elect-
ed governor he will take office
with no political debts to pay. In
gathering about him a long list of
appointments to carry on the state's
business he will not be obligated to
his political supporters but will se-
cure help best fitted for the work
just as he would in his chain of five
slores or on his ranch.
Will Restore Confidence.
(Muskogee Phoenix.)
F. E. Herring of Elk City, one of
the half dozen Oklahoma democrats
who are at present earnestly engaged
in seeking the gubernatorial nomina-
tion, is in Muskogee taking advant-
age of the E. O. A. A. meeting farm-
ers of Eastern Oklahoma.
Mr. Herring is a farmer-merchant
on a large scale in his part of the
state. He personally farms 400 acres,
his crops being alfalfa, corn and hogs;
he also has a string of stores in five
country towns of the west side, He is
an old timer in Oklahoma, coming to
the west side from Hill county, Texas,
in 1884. He was a member of the
constitutional convention. Compressed,
in a few words, he says his campaign
slogan is: "To restore confidence of
Ihe people outside in the str.te of Okla
homa."

Encouragement from Taxpayers.
(Altus Times.)
Hon. F. E. Herring of Elk City, can-
didate for the democratic nomination
for governor, was in Altus Friday,
shaking hands with old friends and
getting acquainted with new ones.
Mr. Herring has been taking occasion
al trips over the state to learn the
condition of his candidacy, and came
to Jackson county expecting to be
greeted by many old time friends and
warm supporters. In thiB he has
not been mistaken, for on all sides he
found offers of support, promises of
effective aid, and the encourage^
ment of the people who pay the taxes
During the afternoon Mr. Herring
received a phone message from Head
rick asking him to come over for a
to some of the polling places where he
had been informed he would find
them. He sat out on the grass in the
West yard on South Oak street for
a half hour and met quite a number
of ^citizens and conversed with them
on state topics and undoubtedly made
some friends as he is a pleasant gen
tletnan and has a thorough knowledge
of state affairs. He is at present the
only announced candidate from the
west side of the state and has an
Immense following. He left on the
evening train for Tulsa but said he
of his old friends and neighbors. He
went, and between trains made an
address and held a regular political
love feast. A large crowd of farmers
and business men assembled to hear
him, and he gave them plenty of
food for thought in a blunt, straight
from the shoulder manner.
