Thrilliner Railway Picture
(Wns Sundav at Criterion
“Thunder,” the new Lon Chaney
starring vehicle, a Metro-Goldwyn-
Mayer sound synchronized-production,
which Is coming to the Criterion The-
atre Sunday, Is decidedly worth while
entertainment, for It tells a human
Interest story and is set against a
background of mighty thrills and ad-
venture.
There Is deft characterization in It
too. as, of course, there always Is In
Chancy picture. There Is also ro-
mance, speed and authentic atmos-
phere. It also shows the beautiful
Phyllis Haver in what she has an-
nounced as her farewell to the screen.
Permeating all tho scones is breath-
taking adventure. Thundering loco-
motives rush out of the dark like Ufa*
breathing monsters; n crack limited
races the Mississippi flood—and wins
—men sacrifice thoir lives for their
calling, and so on. Altogether, "Thun-
der” Is JUBt about tho most thrill-
crammed picture ever presented.
Chancy’s role, that of a lovable old
engineer, is vastly different from any
of Ills previous characterizations It
Is not on the order of the grotesque
but Is, Instead intensely poignant ami
human. As old "Grumpy,” veteran en-
gineer, he appears to be always growl-
ing, never satisfied with anything,
hut underneath be idolizes MH eons
and little grandson and worships the
traditions of the road he bns served
bo long. „ ,
In every respect "Thunder is a
saga of the railroads. It has fairly
caught the sweeping and relentless
force of the giant locomotives and tho
spirit of tho men who operate them:
their Joys, griefs and perils. Undor
all this, It tells a delicate human love
story and tho vivid tale of a man
who clings to his Ideals through trag
edy and hardship.
