The teal liberal doesn’t let himself

This doesn't moan that he la

have an oplnl*’ On the contrary,
ho has a very ■•rfinile creed.
There Isn’t any official body to
apeak for liberals, and In the nature
of things there never will he. But
If In fairly ssfe to set down the fol-
lowing >s something like the credo
of the true liberal:
1. I believe In open mtndedrfesd
and will always listen patiently and
hopefully to a new Idea, even when
If goes against one of my favorite
oM Ideas,
I. I do B0t accept any new Idea
nntil I have put H to the test as any
good .scientist would do; nor do 1
cling to an outworn Idea simply be-
cause 1 like It or because other peo-
ple still cling to It.
A 1 believe that opinions are easy
to get and ought to be easy to
change.
4. | believe that facts are hard to
get and Impossible to change; hnt
1 also know that many a so-called
fact !g not a fact at all. but only an
Msusmpllon.
k. I car* less about being consis-
tent than about being constructive,
remembering Emerson’s words ”A
foolish consistency is the hobgoblin
of little minds.”
5. I believe in free speech, freedom
of the press, and freedom of assem
bly. as guaranteed hy the Constltu
tlon, for I know that only through
free discussion can facts be spread,
opinions altered aad dangerous dog
mas exposed to the light and
destroyed.
That seems a simple and straight
forward creed. But pig-headed peo
pie have always fought it. Witch
burners and Inquisitors and crulci
fiers, tyrants and lynchers and dema
gogues hate the liberal mind—be-
cause tbey fear It
But the liberal mind is always the
happiest mind, and the richest, and
the most serviceable to other minds.
You can prove that by starting
