\V. S. Morgan, manu^r of thd Big
Jo Lumber yard tit this place, hud a
farmer friend of hia, W. A. Howell,
of El Reuo, as a guest the first of tho
week. Of course the mere fact that
they were Iriwndb and enjoyed Tues-
day is interesting but theire is auotli
er story equally as important. Mon-
day evening Mr. Howell was at Ty-
rone, Oklahoma, and organized a lo-
cal association of the Oklahoma Fruit
Growers Association of which lie is
secretary. They held the meeting at
a school house and he conferred with
the members, about fifteen, in re
gard to the raisinng or cantaloupes.
For tills section he recommended tht
Bur roll melon which is adapted to
this Boil and climate, which few sta-
tes can ralge, but oil buy.
Some time ago the farmers In this
section attempted to raise melons,
but all did not raiso tbe same kind
ot melon and they did not know how
to put up tho fruit and pack it for
shipment and sale at the markets.
Mr. Howell explained to them that a
presentable article together with ex-
cellency In quality was necessary, in
other words, melons not put up in a
presentable appearance would not
•sell so readily as ones that were, and
that quality was a secondary thought
to the purchasers, and that to com-
pote successfully they must raise an
article that would be put up caro
fully and have excellent eating qual-
ities.
At Tyrone, about two hundred and
fifty acres will be planted and ship-
ped from that point. Some of the
melons may be marketed here. If
they have a reasonable crop, from
sixty to seventy-five cars will bv
shipped and will bring from $400 to
$500 a car net. Melons over ripe,
will ibe utilized for seed and v ill bring
from eleven to twelve cents per
pound. The season will open In Au-
gust and last ablout three months.
The offices of tho Tyrone associa-
tion are A. Lawder, president and J.
W. Warteunbee, secretary. Any one
can become a member at any time, at
a local fee of fifty cents a year and
all instructions for the local members
are looked after by the resident of-
ficers.
Mr. Iiowell, in commenting on the
Mexican bean for this country said,
"They are alright, so are the Span-
ish peanuts, cow peas for enrichment
of soil, kafir, milo maize and kindred
grains. The farmers should get away
from planting one thing and the silo
i3 the coming thing for this section
because tills will never be an irri-
gable country. If iieople wdll raise
what their soil and climate will favor
then nthese farms out here will be
-■-ought atfvr the buyers rathor than
on the market, seeking buyers.
"There Is no Kansas association
but we have members who are iden-
tified with us in this state. We ship
to all points in the United States,
have agents at all shipping points,
know where th/< mar,et3 for fruit and
vegetables are, and never get Into a
lutted market. We are expecting the
Tyrone people to make a success of
the enterprise and look for richer re-
turns from our ventuivs j>. xt y, ar."
