her, and I mean to keep my promise to'
you.”
*‘1 know you will if you can, but I’m
afraid it is impossible, for the poor child
must be dead,” he replied sorrowfully.
“Now don’t be so hopeless for I am
sure your daughter is still living, and
now make up your mind to go back
across the deep blue sea and revive your
health which is leaving you here in Italy
for whenever I find your Carmen you do
not want to be helpless, but you want to
be the picture of health so you can enjoy
j life with her through your remaining
* years,” said the lord.
“Oh!” moaned the count, “Don’t ask
me to go to America, because most every
street and city I entered would remind
me of my dear dead wife and lost daugh-
ter—the two Carmens who were so
much alike.”
“I know it will be hard for you, but
it is for the best that you should go,”
answered Lord Athelstone.
“My Caimen! my Carmen!” said the
count, “If I did not think you might be
living, I would rather die than to return
to our old home without you.”
“Yes; but you must go, for it is the
better way. Will you return?” asked
the lord.
“Yes, yes, I suppose I shall,”the count
answered.
Then the two sat and talked of old
memories far into the night, retiring at
a very late hour.

more suspense.’’
The lord was even more nervous than
before, after looking into the eyer of the
count, as he said, “Just a moment, Ed-
win; calm yourself. I came to take you
back with me and it seems as though I
had just come in time.”
“Why what do you mean?” he asked.
”1 mean just this” answered the lord,
"Italian air does not agree with you, for
you look as if you were ready for your
grave and here you are juRt in the prime
of your life.”
“And is this all you want? Have you
no news of Carmen, my lost child? .Why
should I go back to revive old memories?
Why should I want to live at all? I have
n >thing to live for and I think I should
be better off dead, than to live such a
life as I am living now,” replied the
count.
“Cheer up: don’t give up hope,” said
the lord. “Just ten years ago this
