An English survivor of the South
African war, who was often sent on
long-distance night reconnaissance,
has worked out e system whereby
anyone can be right at home in the
dark without compass or other in-
strument to aid the sense of direct
tion, stye Popular Science Monthly*
He worked out tin exact movement
and direction of the largest and most
easily distinguished lights in tbs
heavens ao that the least aofeatifte
eye can recognise these signs by
sight end the whole dome of tbs
heavens becomes a vast compass.
If there wers'fir* balloons or bea-
cons placed in t)w heaven*, north,
east, south end wait, it would be
easy for anyone to go in these dire* 5
tioils by simply following the signs*
Similarly, if one wished to go, say,
a hand’s breadth to the right at left
of the beacons, one could easily do so.
The largest stars in the heavens can
be denendfljTupon in the same way.
