September 16 Is an Important date
with the Jews. This will be their
new year, and in cities where there
ts a large Jewish population It is
celebrated on an extensive plan.
The Jewish calendar contains two
New Year days. Rosh Hashanah is
held by tradition to be the day on
which God created the earth. It falls
either in September or October of
the Christian year, being reckoned
by the now moon of the seventh
month, Tlhsrl. Abib is the first
month of the religious year and cor-
responds with March or April, the
year dating from the moon after the
vernal equinox.
The celebration of Rosh Hashanah
Is established by the laws of Moses.
In Leviticus are found these words,
"Speak unto the children of Israel,
saying the seventh month the first
day of the month shall ye have a
Sabbath, a memorla of blowing of
trumpets and hold convocation. Ye
shall do no service work therein, but
ye shall offer an offering made by
fire to the Lord."
Business is generally suspended in
Hebrew commercial circles during
the celebration of the New Year.
Among the orthodox Jews the cele-
bration lasts two days, while the
Reformed Jews celebrate it for one
day only. The Reformed and Or-
thodox congregations differ in cus-
toms, but not beliefs. The Orthodox
congregations cling to customs said
to have been established by rabbis
of generations long ago, while the
Reformed congregations stand strict-
ly on the law as it is given in the
five books of Moses.

IN THE RECONSTRUCTION OF
PARKER BUILDING, WHICH
BURNED LAST YEAR.
New York, Sept. 13.—Before the
twelve-story Parker Building caught
fire last year It had been called
'fireproof." But the fire "gutted" It
completely, killing three men and de
stroylng hundreds of thousands of
dollars' worth of property—principal-
ly because the open elevator shafts
and stalrwayB allowed the flames to
Bpread from one floor to another anj
because not enough fireproof material
had been used to protect the columns.
Most of the metal frame was left in
good condition, however, and now the
reconstruction Is begun. The archl
tect and builder have set out to teach
New York a lesson in Dreprooflng.
With the experience of the Are be-
hind them, they are going to show
what a really fireproof building Is.
For the floor arches the architect
has specified twelve-Inch hollow terra
cotta blocks, of the kind used In tue
city's most modern skyscrapers." In
the process of manufacture these
blocks have been subjected to a heat
of 2000 degrees and are proof asalnst
the hottest fire. They are to be laid
so that they will cover the bottom
surfaces of beams and girders, pro-
tecting the metal members by two
Inches of fireproof material.
ln place of Insufficient colmun-cov-
erlng in the old Parker Building, the
columns ln the new building will
have as protection a three-Inch thick-
ness of hard-burned terra cotta Joined
together by Portland cement mortar.
This covering will insulate the metal
from the fiercest heat capable of be-
ing generated ln the building.
The ©levator shafts and stairways
are to be enclosed ln such a manner
that, if a fire Btarts, it will not be
able to spread from one floor to an-
other but will be confined to the lovel
of Its origin. In every other detail
the architect and builder have
planned to make the hew structure
absolutely fireproof.
