There are probably ten times as
many girls between 12 and 15 years
of age that are reading novels dally,
many of them inferior, as there are
girls of the same age studying music.
From what the writer knows of
Maxmllllan Dick, the great violinist
who will appear In Shawnee this win.
ter, the alto singer, as well as the
pianist who appear with him on the
program, will sing and play correct
ly. That Is one reason why we hailed
with delight the news that we were
to have a good lecture course. The
appearance of people on t.he concert
platform who sing and play correctly
Is what we need here at present.
To hear Maxmilllan Dick is alone
worth the price of the whole lecture
course. He Is a musician whose rep-
utation was made by genius and hard
work, not by having his ability
padded by sensational press agents.
Frank Damrosch has resigned as
director of the New York Glee club.
He has been succeeded by E. M. Dick,
inson of Chicago. Edward A. Mc*
Dowell, America's greatest composer,
directed the club prior to Damrosch.
Frank and Walter Damrosch are sons
of Leopold Damrosch, who died In
New York in 1885. They were both
born in Breslan, Germany. The sons,
like the father in his time, are able
composers and directors.
Beethoven, the groatwft musician
the world has ever known, was born
In Germany In 1770 and dii>d In 1827
It Is surprising how many people
err in speaking of an alto or contralto
voice. The latter is the lower of the
two and is the lowest female voice,
the world "contralto" being a com
pound word—"contra" meaning under
ir below. Consequently the word
contralto" means the lower voice.
"Yes," said the prima donna,
made a great hit last night."
"How so?
"Why, when I sang 'Home, Sweet
Home.' every one got up and went
home."
There are still a great many people
who persist In speaking of it as a
pie-ana. Why not be correct and give
the "1" the short sound?
Brown—"What did your wife say
about your coming home so late the
other night?"
Jones—"Nothing at all. She just
sat down at the piano and played
Tell Me the Old, Old Story.'"
Shawnee should have an injunction
served against Oklahoma City, re-
straining the latter from permitting
any of her inferior musicians from
visiting our city.
Another sacred concert has been
announced for Sunday night at the
Presbyterian church. These concerts
always draw large congregations and
have done a great good, both from a
religious and an artistic view.
Every little while there are evi
dences that all local churches are
awake to the fact that there Is a de-
mand for good choirs and efforts are
being made to meet that requirement
Let the good work keep on. Give as
much thought and consideration to
music as to any feature of church
work, and watch the congregations
grow
We have yet to find the first looal
pianist who has studied technique
correctly, most students not even
knowing what is meant when they
are asked If they have studied It. No
real musician could have conceived
such a state of affairs in even a vil-
lage in the United States at this
time and age.
