SECURE LAND NEAR SHAW-

He Should Be Informed That the In
dian Has Ceased to Roam Here and
That His $1.50 Will Buy One
One-hundredth of an Acre.
A gentleman in this city Is in re
celpt of a let ti r from Rochester, N
Y., which ought to be published In
Puck. The writer Inquires whether
he can buy land around Shawnee at
$1.50 per acre, and how far he would
have to ship farm machinery if he
wanted to buy. The following reply is
suggested:
My dear Chump:—Yours received.
In reply we beg to state that you can
buy all the farm land in this county
at the following prices:
Land which raises thirty bushels of
wheat to the acre each year, not less
than 10 cents per acre.
Land which raises over thirty bush-
els, not less than 15 cents per acre.
We have no land raising less than
thirty bushels.
Land of the same quality as that
around Rochester can be had for noth
ing if you can find any of It.
There are no farm implement houses
west of Chicago. Only wooden plows
are used and these are whittled out by
the Indians. The country is greatly
in need of missionaries to teach its
people the art of civilization, but we
do not advise you to come as your
evident lack of intelligence would ren
der you subject to commitment to an
institution for the feeble-minded or
insane.

Some Seasonable Advice.
It may be a piece of superfluous ad
vice to urge people at this season of
the year to lay in a supply of Cham-
berlain's Cough Remedy. It is almost
sure to be needed before winter is
over, and much more prompt and sat-
isfactory results are obtaUad when
taken as soon as a cold Is contracted
and before it has become settled In
the system, which can only be dine
by keeping the remedy at hand. This
temedy is so widely known and so
altogether good that one should heB
itate about buying it in preference to
any other. It Is for sale by the Owl
Drug Store. *
LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE FINDS
SATISFACTION IN HIS INSUR- I
ANCE ATTITUDE.
Better to Defer Action, as the Secre-
I
tary Suggested, Than to Ji .np in
Too Quick and Make a
Hasty Action.
Guthrie, Okla., Oct. 25—In recogni-
tion of the action of William Grimes,
insurance commissioner for Oklaho-
ma, in refusing to take action against
the Insurance companies now under
tire in New York until the investiga-
tion is ended, claiming that such hasty
action would endanger the policy hold-
ers, of whom there are 9,000 In these
companies in Oklahoma, Mr. Grimes
today received a letter from William
W. Armstrong, chairman of the legis-
lative committee, which is making the
investigation of the insurance compa-
nies. Mr. Armstrong says in part:
"It seems clear to me that the wise
course is to defer action for the pres-
ent and thus avoid creating the confus
ion and embarrassment which will
necessarily follow individual action by
the separate states upon our inquiry.
We believe that we have the situation
well in hand. We have no desire to
injure the insurance business; indeed
our purpose is to build it up and not to
tear it • down, and we confidently ex-
pect to be able to make it stronger
and safer and more attractive in the
future through the legislation we will
recommend. If our work, now practi-
cally only begun, should result in the
lapse of a large number of policies,
which would follow the exclusion of
companies from business in various
states, it would be a great injustice to
the policy holders, and we ought all to
proceed slowly and cautiously because
of the nervousness necessarily excited
among policy holders by the facts we
have disclosed.
"1 am making no apology, of course,
for the companies or for the things
they have done, but I do feel an ear-
nest desire that the immediate result
of our investigation should not be in-
jury to policy holders and possibly to
companies, which have not been prop-
erly conducted, through general appre-
hension of insurance conditions as de-
veloped thus far by us, and would
much prefer that judgment be withheld
until our work is concluded, which
will be within two or three months."

Turkeys and the Boll Weevil.
R. L. Birdsong, a farmer living in
the Washita bottoms, near Davis, says
that turkeys are a sure antidote for
the boll weevil. He says that as a re-
sult of his experiments he finds that
100 turkeys and 300 chickens will keep
every boll worm and all other Insects
oil of forty acres of cotton. He says
that within a radius of fifty yards of
his home ten turkeys kept the cotton
field free from boll worms, and he is
sure that the same plan would work
as well on a larger scale.

A Judicious Inquiry.
A well known traveling man who
visits the drug trade says he has often
heard druggists inquire of customers
who asked for a cough medicine
whether it was wanted for a child or
for an adult, and if for a child they
almost invariably recommend Cham

for this is that they know there is no

cures. There is not the least danger
