IT IS WORKING HARD TO SHOW
THE GREAT ADVANTAGES OF
THE 8OUTHWE8T.
Low Rates, Judicious and Truthful Ad-
vertising and Special Induce-
ments Are Bringing the
People.
Kansas City, Mo., Oct 18.—C. L.
Seagrave, general colonization agent
of the Santa Fe road, passed through
here yesterday en route to Topeka.
"There is a big movement of colon-
ists to the Southwest," said Ml. Sea-
grave, "and particularly to the Pan-
handle of Texas. That country la de-
veloping greatly and the railroads are
carrying hundreds of settlers to that
part of the country. This means that
there 1b to be a big development of
Western Texas during the next five
years, and it is a couutry that should
show for itself, and there Is no reason
why It should not become a grand
place to live in. The Santa Fe, as well
as other lines, are making extremely
low rates Into that part of the country,
and the land is so cheap that It might
be said to be the only place In the
Southwest that the poor man can se-
cure a home at a reasonable rate.
"Another plaoe that is being pub-
lished is the San Joaquin Valley of
California, and by this is meant not
only the valley around Tulare, Fresno
and Bekerfleld, and other places, but
it means Stockton, Sacramento and
points in the northern part of the val-
ley. The Fresno county supervisors
have started a car to the Fast, and
have set aside the sum of $10,000 to
defray expenses of the same while It
is advertising the country around that
city. Other counties are talking of
doing the same, and I look for a big
advertising proposition to come out
of that country wlthlu the next year.
"The Santa Fe road is carrying mors
people to the Southwest and to Cali-
fornia than at any time in Its history,
outside of some of the big conventions,
and they are a class that build tip the
country and make It rich."
