Washlngt jn, D. C., Oct. 18.—Prompt |
ly at the hour fixed this morning I'res-1
ident Roosevelt departed on his 2,00" j
mile journey through the south. The
special train left over the Southein
railway, and consisted of a private
car, a baggage car, two sleepers and
a dining car.
There was a largo crowd at the
station to see the departure and the
services of a number of special officers
were required to preserve order.
The party consisted of President and
Mrs. Roosevelt and maid, Secretary
Loeb, Surgeon General Rixey, Messrs.
A. C. Latta, John L. McGrow, John
Mcllhenny, John L. Greenway, L. S.
Hrown of the Southern railway, rep-
repsentatves of the several press asso-
ciations, one photographer, two secret
service men and two messenjers. Mrs.
Roosevelt, according to present plans.
Is to accompany the president as far
as Atlanta, and the most of the other
members of the party will return h' me
from Little Rock, leaving the president
and his personal attendants to journey
on to New Orleans.
Richmond, Va, Oct. 18.—President
Roosevelt's tour southward to New Or-
leans has begun and In this state he
met with a continual ovation. He made
an address in Capit d square In this
city and was entertained at luncheon
and driven about the city before his
train departed.
Grading O. & C. C.
Bartlesville, I. T., Oct. 18.—Fifteen
miles of the grade for the Oklahoma
& Cherokee Central railway is com
pleted between Chelsea and Alluwe,
and work is still in progress. It is
hoped to get the road Into Nowata by
early spring, when the work of grad-
ing and track laying ti Bartlesville
will be taken up. The announcement
was made by J, B. Phillips, of Warren,
Pa., a member of the railway com-
pany and connected also with the
Cherokee Oil and Gas company, and
tiie Cornplanter Refining company,
both of which later companies are as-
sociated in tile fit. Louis pipe line deal.
Mr. Phillips said that the company
would install a system of gasoline
motors for pulling the coaches, the
passenger trains to be run in the day
time and the freight trains, with regu-
lar locomotives, at night.
Plans are maturing in this city for
an electric line between this city and
CoffeyviUe, with a probability that the
line will l>e extended to Ochletata and
Ramona and other towns in the Bar-
tlesville oil district.
NEW ROCK
ISLAND DEPOT
It Is stated today that tenants on the
Rock Island right of way just east of
the depot on Union avenue have been
requested to move their buildings and
other fixtures, as the road wants to
use the ground. This Is believed to
he the forerunner of the long expected
and promised passenger and freight
stations. There is no doubt that the
road Intends to build two elegant de-
pots here, for President B. F. Winchell
himself has so said.

St Louis, Oct. 18.—Trains on near-
ly all roads Into this city ran many
hours late, owing to the floods. Out-

on the Bluff line went into a washout
near Alton, III., and the crew was ob-
liged to swim to higher ground. The
entire train of seventeen freight cars
and an engine went Into the water and
it Is believed that several tramps lost
their lives.
