THE MODERN MINSTREL,

ifuaife to til' him to the balance of the passengers.
I know thee not nor care who thou mayst be.
Thou art an organ grinder to the eye
Of myriad listening passers-by.
And some perchance a penny tling to thee
And think no more. But unto me ?
Oh, thou dost 'lead me by thy organ's cry
Through every clime, 'neath every ideal sky,
From sea mysterious to mysterious sea,
Until my soul, oblivious of to-day,
And senses lulled, into a visional tranci
Feed unrestricted on the minstrel lay
Thou seemest to give intimesof sweet romance,
Swayed by some magic influence.
Tossed on Atlantic's ruthless wave, young,
A waif, unknowing and unknown,
Cast out upon the world alone,
Where never breathed my native tongue,
I saw thee first and on thee hung
(As in thy organ's tender moan
I caught an echo of my own)
As one who all the world among
Finds but one being in whose voice
Tie feels the sympathy to vent
All his soul's deep pent element,
Staking his destiny on the choice.
And ever since around thee cling
All tender memories, hovering;
And ever since thou seemest to be
(I care not who, from whence or what)
A being of deep mystery—
^ A spirit whose charms around me lling
The sadness of thy aimless lot,
Caught in thy lonely wandering,
The world forgetting and forgot.
