Council met In regular session Mon-
day night. Officers present. Block,
Friend, Pain and Maxwell. Miles
was absent.
The reading of the minutes of the
September meeting were read and
approved.
Everything went along harmon-
iously and nice with but few excep-
tions. Friend registered a small
kick agulnst the billies recently pur-
chased by the city, thinking they
were a little light to be used In case
of necessity. It seems that Mr. Friend
understands that a billy Is used to
kill, not to tame.
Mr. Maxwell and nnothej gentle-
man told of their visit to the city
jail, In which both men entered and
came out deathly sick. They de-
nounced It and swore that It was
not a decent place for a dog to re-
main over night. Their talk had no
effect with the council ami nothing
was done with the Jail question.
A motion was put by Mr. Pain,
supported by Mr. Friend, that the
council adjourn to meet lu regular
sesHlon October 12. Motion carried
and the two gentlemen left the hall
with fcmlles of content. It seems that
Mr. Miles has the gun all cocked and
primed, ready for business, but was
unable to be here to pull the trigger
and for this reason the council ad-
journed until the 12th to give Mr.
Miles a chance to tire his gun.

—Jltn Glllen, formerly of Hennes-
sey, returned Monday to accept his
old position as head clerk with the
| New York Double store of J. H. Crl-
der & Sons. Jimmy was a favorite
among Hennessey people and his re-
turn Is highly welcomed. Mr. Glllen
Is, and always was, the best clerk
that ever stood behind the counter
to wait upon the trade of Hennessey
and vicinity. The fact that Jimmy
came to Hennessey when grass grew
In the streets and 'old shacks', as
they were called, were used as busi-
ness houses, and his kind treatment
to the customers, gave him a broad
and favorable acquaintance wlilcl
will always Ik* remembered. His
return to the New York double store
will add immensely to their already
big trade with fair and courteous
treatment.
Sometime Monday night entrance
was gained to the cold storage rootn
of Frank Robert's by breaking two
pad-locks on the front door. The
thief or thieves helped themselve to
enough boose to last until after the
circus at any rate. Common keg
beer was not good enough and a
number of cases of different style
bottle goods were taken. It could
not have been the work of one per-
>n alone. '1 here must have been
several In the deal as Night Watch
Anderson bad to be watched while
the goods were being taken. It Is
not thought that the storage was
broken Into by anyone residing In or
near Hennessey, but that the parties
knew a little something about the
storage room, to make so complete
a haul. Marshal Cochran was noti-
fied early Tuesday morning, but up
to this time has no clue to the rob-
bers. An old plowshare, an Iron
xl and two broken padlocks were
found lu front of the door the next
morning.
A Big Time Monday.
Ringling Brothers will unload
their Big New Giant of tented amuse-
ments lu Hennessey Sunday and will
give you two exhibitions on Mon-
day. October 0. Hennessey has made
a great hit In securing this monster
show, unexcelled In the whole world.
The fact that this Is the only town
in Oklahoma on the Rock Island
road in which Ringling Brothers will
show this year Is evidence that Ilen-
uessey Is the best town on the line,
"and you can't beat a showman's
Judgment " The largestcrowd,since
the opening of the Cherokee strip,
will be here. Already people are
coining from a distance and by the
time the circus arrives the town will
be lined with people and the bord-
ers of the city with "prairie scoon-
ers." it will be the blggtst time of
the Benson. Enjoyment for every-
body. It will be a business trip as
well as a pleasant one with many
people coming from a distance, know-
ing that Hennessey Is the cheapest
and best market on the Rock island
line, this advantage will be taken.
A town of merchants who do busi-
| ness on business principles and gives
' the farmer bis money's worth.
Compliment Campbell Brothers.
Well, the two large circuses have
come and gone, and no one Is much
the wiser, unless It be the man who
bet all his money on the shell-game
at Harris' Nlckle Plate show. The
Nlckle Plate was .me of the rotten-
est of railroad aggregations tliati
ever came over the pike. There was
absolutely nothing to the whole
show deserving of a compliment.!
And the management allowed a gang
of fakirs to operate their nefarious
vocations right under cover of the
tent. How different from Campbell
Bros., and how notlcable the con-
trast. Campbell Bros, putupauum-
ber one entertainment and the man-
agers were courteous In their treat-
ment to everybody. Their perform-
ers were artists In their lines. They
gave the people a better show than
was expected. When Campbell Bros,
return to Ponca City thej- will get a
hearty welcome, but the Nlckle Plate
could not get a pleasant look.—Pon-
ca City Democrat.

—Mrs. ('. P. Rhodes, of the Rhodes
hotel, is In Kansas City this week
attending the carnival.
—The merchants are all enjoying
an Immense business this week. Well,
making arrangements to attend the
big show,
—The large new Need ham elevator
will be In full operation Iti a few
days. This will make the seventh
elevator In Hennessey, all doing all
the business they can bautlle. Guess
Hennessey isn't much of a grain
market, neighbor!
—Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Munch and
daughter, Miss Pearl, left Suuday
evening for Ohio. They will attend
the carnival at Kansas City a couple
of days and the fair at Si. Louis the
remainder of the week. They expect
to be absent about three weeks.
A Bad Coon.
A native of Africa gets a "right"

knocked out all around. Just for
as little a thing asmaklngthc crack,
