IMPOKT1NOE OF COUNTY
WESTS.
"With the passage of a law by the
last legislature compelling county
excise boards to levy money for free
county fairs, the ciunty agents use-
fulness Is greater than before, his
necessity is almost imperative. The
low prices of farm products also
calls for greater encouragement of
farmers to keep up production in
spite of the fact Jiiat they lost money
on their 1920 crop. This is another
place where the use of the county
agent comes iu. Then there is the
fact of group organizations to stim-
ulate different crop and livestock de
partments, where the county agent is
the sole stimulator and detail work
man. All over the state of Oklahoma
the need of a county agent and his
real value has become a fixed fact
Here In Ix)gan county the agent
now has some fourteen farm or-
ganizations to look after, such as
the Shorthorn, the Hereford, the
Polan China, Durroc hogs, three cot-
ton associations, three grain asso-
ciation. as well as the boy and girl
pig and poultry clubs.
The county agent is the main stay
of the free fair association. It is he
who put over the vote for it. and he
sees to it that the farmers and their
wives and children are getting prem-
ium stocks to bring to the fair.
To be a county agent is no small
affair under present conditions of
farming. The county agent for U>gan
county owns his own automobile,
which he drove from January first
1920 to January first 1921, 9,865
miles and it cost him for repairs,
gasoline and all over $1,500 to do so.
This comeg out of his wages, for he
gets no expense account.
It can be seen then why Logan
county farmers are beginning to ap-
preciate the full value of the county
agents work for them and no longer
think mouey paid for his services is
money thrown ipvay.
wom>f:kftl corn summer.
When this cro>p season ends it
shall prove to have been the greatest
corn year in the history of Okla-
homa. President WJhitehurst of the
Board of Agriculture, gives 112,000,-
000 bushels as the season's yield,
but whatever it is, the crop season
for corn has been ideal and even
the late planted fields are maturing
a full yield.
(Many are of the opinion that
nothing has been gained because less
cotton and more corn has been plant
ed, and also the fact that corn ha
matured a full crop instead of being
burnt up in the middle of July, as
it frequently happened in the past.
They think that cotton is the only
money crop, even when it brings a
low price. Hut this year's crop will
encourage livestock and dairy and
hog raising again. Whatever the
depreciated prices of livestock and
farm products generally may
farmers who at least raise their own
meat, milk and butter are better off
than those who raise but the on
crop, cotton or wheat.
Rains in the middle of July and
again the beginning of this week
have preserved everything as green
as last May, which is a great bless-
ing to Oklahoma, whether high prices
for farm products prevail or not.
Everything that has been sown or
planted has made flood, and the
year's labor has not been lost.
6. S. Osbune and E. L. Conrad,
two discharged soldiers last week,
while in Guthrie, robbed their com-
panion (E. E. Christopher of $12."., and
skipped out. Wednesday Grant Red
mond went to Wichita, where they
were captured, and brought them
to Guthrie. They both pleaded
guilty. One is also said to be a de-
serter.
Phil Traband has disposed of the
Guthrie Garage on West Harrison to
Bert Johns and Charles Allen, who
will take charge this week. The new
owners will improve and enlarge the
business.
County teachers took their exam-
ination in the District Court f«>r
three days this wek. Their papers
are now being passed upon by Mrs.
