HELP OUT DAIRY COWS
When the pastures dry up in July,
August and September, anil the grass
becomes hard and unpalatable, stock
declines in condition and there is a
marked reduction in the amount of
milk given by dairy cows. Farmers
■who depend upon pastures alone al-
ways suffer from this cause, and
wonder that soiling crops are not more
generally frown. They are always
profitable. In answer to manyinquir-
ies regarding the succession of crops
grown, the results of many experi-
ments are given.
The New Jersey station has worked
on the problem for seven years. The
first crop harvested in the spring was
rye, usually ready for feeding May fst.
and lasted from 12 to 15 days. This,
of course was sown In the fall. Rye
may also be pastured. Wheat follow-
ing immediately after rye did not yield
as heavily, but remained succulent
longer and could be fed about May 15.
Alfalfa is ready for use about the mid-
dle of May. It Is cut just before
blooming. Broadcasting from 30 to 35
pounds of seed the last of April or the
ist of May on well prepared soil' with-
out a nurse crop gives generally the
best results. The average yield 'on a
single acre for five years was 19 1-2
tons of green forage produced at a
cost of $36.00
Valuable experiments were conduct-
ed by the Wisconsin station for sever-
al years, and "the following succession
was found to be most satisfactory:
Fall rye sowed September 10, ready for
cutting May 15th to June 1. Alfalfa
ready to cut June 1 tij 15. Red Clover
June 15 to 25. Peas and Oats, sowed
April 16, ready to cut June 25 to July
5. A second crop will run to July 15.
Oats sowed May 5, ready to cut July
15 to 25. Second crop of alfalfa ready
to cut July 15 to 30. Rape sowed May
25 ready to cut August 1 to 15. Flint
corn, sawed May 20, ready to ®cut
August 1 to 25. Sorghum, sown June 1
ready to cut September 10. Evergreen
sweet corn, sown May 31, ready to cut
September 25. Rape sown July
20, ready to cut September 25 to Octo-
ber 10.
This furnished green feed for ani-
mals from May 15 to October 10th and
proved Aiighly profitable. l^Mperiments
show that farmer's herds that depend
upon pasture alone show a marked
falling off in milk production from the
highest yield in June to almost the
lowest yield in August. The station
herd, fed on soiling crop, Showed its
highest milk production in April, where
it remained almost constant until June
after which it declined gradually and
reached its lowest point in October.
_ureful study of these two statements,
will show any farmer what he may be
able to do by the use of soiling crops.
Nearly all the crops grown in those
experiments were most palatable and
satisfactory when fed at or before full
bloom. When harvested either too.
green or too ripe, the forage lost much
of its palatability, and consequently
was not readily consumed.
Much greater yield and better quality
of forage was obtained by thick seed:
ing. This was especially the case
with the different kinds of corn and
sorghum and was also noticeable with
oats, peas, barley and rye. In New
York oats and Canada field peas, sown
together, made one of the most ser-
viceable in the succession of forage
crops.

on cream containing 30 per cent or more butter fat over that containing under
30 per cent.
