A man might appreciate the com-
pliment, but you shouldn't tell a
itout girl that she is all wool and a
yard wide.
Can Uncle Sam be preparing for
war? There are more men at the
stations than at any time before.
If we must licit Mexico why not get
it over with?
Some of the mysteries of the high
cost of living may be explained by
the fact that Morris & Co., Chicago
packers made $1,900,000 profit last
year. You may resl assured thai
the packers are getting therin.
; February is quite a noted mcnth
even if it is the shortest. The 2d was
ground hog day, the 12th Lincoln's
birthday, the 14th St. Valentines day
and the 22d Washigton's anniversary
and Lent begins on the 25th.
A systems of rural credits, where-
by the farme could borrow money at
a cheaper rate* is. greatly to be de-
gired, but better yet would be a sys-
tem of farm marketing, whereby the
farmar would recieve what his pro-
ducts were worth and the consumer
not have to pay and more than they
were worth--a system which would
put the farmer and the consumer in
closer touch. When that is accom-
plished, the thrifty farmer can pay
off his debts and won't need any
cheap money.
The fact is not generally known
says an exchange, that Luther Bur-
bank, the great originator of new and
valuable for jis of plant life' has suc-
ceeded in producing a variety of
muskmelon, larger than the ordinary
muskmelon, that ripens late in the
season and it picked when ripe ^an
be stored in the cellar for winter use
like potatoes, apples, ect. The flavor
of the Burbank muskmelon is as deli-
cious and palatable as the kind
grown in the melon belt in Southern,
Indiana. The only difference is that
the Southern Indiana muskmelon
must be eaten when ripe. It will not
stay in good condition very long,
even when it is placed on ice.
Boost For Trade.
No town will become a good busi-
ness center so long as its business
men rely on a few of their number to
make the effort to bring trade to
town. Too often the men in a few
lines of trade are about the only ones
that reach out after custom. Other
merchants wait until these men in-
duce the people to come to town and
content themselves with trade that
naturally drift to their place. A pub-
lic spirited man should ask himself
if he is doing his best to atrract peo-
ple to come to town to trade. No
town is a success unless all lines are
workin g to extend the trade as far as
possible and trying to bring a larger
territory in the circle in which the
town is a business cen tcr.
Says an Illinois paper: "Some
fellow down the line says the happi-
est people in the world are these
who keep out of debts, out of pol-
ities, out of office, shun notorety,
make an honest living by honest
methods, living up to the Golden
Rule, serving the living God and
neglect no opportunity of doing good
He should have gone a little farther
and said that the reason this class
of people were the happiest is be-
cause they are all dead.
WASTES THE TIME OF OTHERS
Wait-a-Minute Woman Declared Re
sponsible for Much That Could
Be Avoided.
The "Minute-man" is one who ii
ready to respond to duty's call at
minute's notice, while the "wait-a-
minute-woman" is always sure tc
keep one waiting for half an hour
says a writer in the Boston Herald
The first is prepared to "kill" the en-
emy, while the second makes a poinl
of "killing" time. If time is money
then what a misappropriation ol
others' funds goes on at the hands
of this stealer of precious mofttcnts
Most petty thieving evokes somt
• kind of punishment sooner or later
and generally the thief comes to i
sense of remorse for such misdoing
but not so this stealer of othei
people's hours; she goes upon hei
way rejoicing, continuing her lift
of thieving without the least com-
punction for all her past offenses.
The "minute-man" marches tc
meet his adversary when he is eum
moned, and he may be counted on ti
be at the appointed place without de
lay; the "wait-a-minute-wonian'
makes a point of not keeping her ap
pointmei#s and merely murmuri
sweetly, "so sorry to have kept yoi
waiting." But she is really not ii
the least "sorry," since genuine con
trition is sure to bring about fuluri
improvement. This is never the cas>
with that incorrigible, for she is jus
as late on the next occasion and n<
more "sorrv."
There are pecple who would never
think of finding fault with their
country or the state to whieh they be-
long but who never let an opportunity
passto run down the place where th< jr
live. That is inconsistent If a man
'is a citizen of his commonwealth or
nation, be is also a citizen of the
town in which he lives and works.
Its laws protects him, its advantages
are his, its schools and other institu-
tions are for'his benfit and that of
his family, Why, then, be so unpa-
triotic as to continually find fault
with the place in which he lives and
seek to injure it? To be sure the town
may have some shortcomings, as
every town has, but the town also
has many good things about it which
far more than balances its defects
The way to improve a town is not
by standing at the street corner talk-
ing against it, but by doing what one
can to promote its welfare, and that
one thing any one can do if he is so
minded.

at the bottom of the prospect by the
collapse of the eating, is now going

of advertising with the results about
