An Early Easter.
People who cease their social ac-
tivities with the coming of Lent ire
to be reminded that the social season
this year will be an exceptionally
short one. In fact it will be the
shortest since the year 1818. Lent
will begin February 12.
The reason of this early arrival
of that season of the year when the
members of the "social whirl" are
forced to iay aside their activities
is that the ideal ecclesiastical moon,
adopted by the churches hundreds
of years ago, determines the date
for Easter which *his year will fall
upon March 23, one day later than
the earliest possible date that Easter
can fall on, March 22. The cus-
tom established by the churches de-
crees that Easter shall fall on the
first Sunday after the full mcon, af-
ter the 21st of March.
An old saying is that an early
Easter means an early Spring.
The early arrival of Ash Wednes-
day opening Lent will shorten winter
to a noticaable degree.
